A searing examination of male friendship and the broader social implications of masculinity in an age of toxic loneliness

Two teenagers leave their small town on a vaguely charted road trip through the northern wilderness, with little more than canned food, second-hand camping gear, and the rifle they buy for reasons neither can articulate. The more they handle the gun, and the farther they get from their parents and peers, girlfriends and online gaming, the less their actions—and the games, literal and metaphorical, they play—are bound by the usual constraints. When one decides to harass a young couple they meet on the highway, the encounter leads them down a road from which there's no coming back.

A searing examination of male friendship and masculinity in an age of toxic loneliness, The Passenger Seat introduces Vijay Khurana as an extraordinary new voice.

I admittedly went into this with no idea what the book was about. Had I known, I may not have downloaded it, however, it's truly well written and the performance grew on me over time. My personal issue with the story is that it's all too real in today's society. Again, that's a personal preference and I don't want to detract from the insightful, raw story that I listened to. This is a great listen if you're ok with a fictional story based in today's reality of male loneliness. I can't emphasize enough how well written this book is, just not my cup of tea.

Tough read, but great writing

Two troubled teenage boys drive north in Canada as a new school year approaches. It’s an odd friendship. Adam is insecure, hostile, unlovable and a risk-taker. Teddy, his best friend, is more popular and seemingly smart, but also a bit lost. Bad things will happen.

The novel is psychologically astute, switching between the boys’ points of view as they drive north, sleeping in Adam’s truck and considering what kind of future, if any, lays ahead for them. The narrator often focuses on their physicality—their bodily functions, their smells, their dirtiness—as much as on their thoughts. His writing can be poetic. However, as the road trip continued, I began to long for resolution. There was a little too much time in the boys’ heads for me, perhaps because I was anxious to learn what happened.

The narration is outstanding. Fajer Al-Kaisi reads with clarity and drama. Overall, I enjoyed this disturbing novel.

Chilling, timely. Beautifully written you can’t stop once you start. You know the darkness this story is about but the details really take you on the ride. It’s not for everyone but I enjoyed it!

Will sit with me for a while
