Publisher's Summary

An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively listenable stories.

An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King's propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.

Critic Reviews

"Narrator Will Patton turns this story into an audio blockbuster.... King's usual sprawling cast of characters is also present, and suffice it to say that Patton does them all justice." (AudioFile)

Weak supernatural storey line.

Although I enjoyed this book the supernatural angle was too far fetched for my liking. Narration was good but I found that the variation in volume between whispers and regular dialog made it hard to listen to when driving.

Will Patton great - story so so

Will Patton did a wonderful job of reading this novel. He adds so much to this book. I will watch for him again.

I read or listen to everything I can when it comes to Stephen King and he has been my go to author for almost 30 years. In the past few years he has become political in his books and it has been a huge turnoff. But in this book he toned down is political rhetoric and it's not distracting to this story.

The outsider is a typical SK story and is well thought out and suspenseful. It has all the ingredients of Kings best novels, a really bad guy ( the outsider ) and the good guys hunting the bad guy. In this case he throws in Holly Gibney from the Mr. Mercedes trilogy. In that story she played an essential part in the mix of characters. After Holley is introduction into this book it seems to take a turn and never gets back into a believable storyline . I didn't like her in this role but many readers seemed to enjoy her introduction.

where has stephen king gone?

man, oh man, i hate this! i have read king for 30-40 yrs. pretty much always loved everything. this is my 1st audible outing so maybe i'm just not connected good unless i'm reading, but i kinda hated this book. i am familiar w/mr. patton as an actor & he is mostly fine in his narration, so i don't know...... the story had no dept, no imagination & was boring as hell. i sincerely hope this is not a new writing style for mr. king. have no doubts, i will read him over & over again. just never this one. i considered the lack of connection & i really don't think its because i was being read to. i guess i'll see when i listen tom a few other books by other authors. but honestly i think it was just this book. so sorry king lovers.(of which i still consider myself a part of) if you want to try this one, i suggest the library, cuz i really don't think many of you would want to own it after you read or listen.

keep your expectations low.

It is not Kings best work by a long margin.

Basically Holly Gibney meets "It".

Total junk.

I couldn't wait for this to be over. Started out great and very compelling but fell into predictable garbage very quickly.

Plus, leave your personal politics out of your story. This and your own stereotype bigotry added zero to the story.

Predictible

Not Stephen Kings best. Predictible, weak ending. A lot of story build up with a quick ending.

The Outsider

I gave the book a "2" because it was nowhere up to the standards that I expected from Steven King.

short and uninspired; not your typical King novel.

one of the most anti-climactic and boring King novels I've ever read, and I've read all his Major Works, and all his short story collections. The outsider felt short by comparison with underdeveloped characters.

A long walk to nowhere

This was a tedious listen. No suspense. No interesting prose. I am evidently not the audience enthralled by King’s writing. An average, college freshman-level writing style.

not worth the time to listen!

old story line, very predictable, lacked originally. I have read about 70% of everything SK has written this is not a Steven King story line...it is a poor effort and smells of needing to sell books, definitely a low poi.t in his career.
