okay, title should have been, "the puppeteer"

Much More appropriate. It is an okay book, solid premise and character development, but after climax is reached, these novels end with the reader shaking his or her head in amazement at the author's cleverness. this novel goes on and on after climax leaving reader irritated, sore, and grumpy...

RETURNING AS JUST TOO BONKERS A PLOT TWIST FOR ME

I really enjoyed The Guilty Wife and was so looking forward to reading this and pre-ordered, confident that I would love this one too...……. but sadly though I percerviered past the butchering of a cat - which I always think is a lazy and unwelcome shorthand signal impending danger - but in fairness in this case was not as gratuitous or casually used as it was used as an integral part of the plot. I struggled on, in honour of the author's previous book but found myself less and less enthusiastic to return to it. I loved the way there were many loose ends and mysterious past events which intrigued - I enjoyed the journalistic life of Gina and the kind heartedness of Ryan but then it all fell apart. I must admit I dozed off and awoke to find myself in what seemed like a very different book with a very implausible if not impossible premise. Let's just say it was as unbelievable as the description of a person who put their books spine side into the bookcase to fit in with their all white apartment when such a design conscious book lover could simply have covered them with labelled white dustjackets which at least would have taken the guess work out of finding the book you wanted.
Like a good listener I switched off and rewound, hoping the part I read would not be quite so preposterous when read in sequence but noooooooooo … I was still very let down by this fanciful turn which almost touched on science fiction … and again I dozed off only to hear a small snippet of the reveal which seemed to be equally ridiculous. I must be honest, there are still gaps in the story I do not know but frankly I have heard enough and it has taken a turn for the almost laughable … were it not for the distressing pet slaughter which still leaves a nasty taste in an impossibly implausible tale.
Hard to rate as it did have great promise …. until it set off like the Starship Enterprise to explore strange and fantastical new territories leaving credibility far behind....
5 Star for mysterious build up and ??? for the very weird rest …
