Publisher's Summary

Ret McCoy was always the new kid, but after three years in the small town of Riverton, he thinks his family may have finally settled. He and his friends have the perfect summer planned before they start seventh grade, and his new job at the local mortuary promises enough pocket money for all the sodas they can drink.

A dare from an older boy quickly ruins their plans. Everyone knows to stay away from the Crooked House, but after Ret and his friends take on the dare to spend the night in the abandoned house, they become caught up in the house’s dark history.

Later, an outsider buys the house. When people start to disappear, Ret is determined to solve the mystery before it swallows the entire town. His obsession with the Crooked House and its strange new owner threatens to put him and his friends in danger more terrifying than anything they could have imagined.

Great read!

This book proves that Mr. McKay is well on his way to becoming a number one writer.

The story took me back to a time I really miss, and he does a fantastic job of painting the picture. The paranormal element was the icing on the cake, making it difficult to find a stopping point! (I spent a lot of time sitting in driveway!)

I highly recommend recommend this book to any King or Koontz fan!

Great coming of age tale!!!

The Other Side of Elsewhere has the perfect balance of fun, action, adventure and horror! If you like Stand by Me, Stranger Things or The Sandlot you will love Brett McKay’s The Other Side of Elsewhere! This coming of age thriller is written from the point of view of a twelve year old boy. His writing is brilliant, and his characters are so real you feel you know them even though some are quite horrifying. This is a captivating book and the reader depicts the characters well. I loved it!!!

Don't do it

I started this thinking that I was going to have a fantastic story. The few reviews all gave it 5 stars and one raved about the narration.
I can only think that the reviewers must personally know the author and narrator, because there is no other way I can fathom that this would receive such high accolades.
The narration is absolutely terrible. The voices all seem the same and the narrator seems to be having a very difficult time getting in to the book. He just sounds bored. But because of the reviews for the book, I decided to press on. Mistake.
As for the story itself, I was very excited when the author said it's happening in Riverton, UT. Growing up in Utah, I can bring some imaging into the reading. But he takes a long time getting started and there is a lot of filler without so much story. The way he throws in some curse words makes me think of an 8 year old swearing then giggling because there aren't any adults around for him to get into trouble (something similar is actually mentioned in the narration.)
I got halfway through the book to the part where they are in church, and I just can't do it anymore. It went from a supposed thriller / horror novel to a Mormon testimony, and this is where the narrator finally seems like he may decide to put some emotion into the reading. No thanks. Not for me. I'm getting my money back on this one.

R.L. STIEN WHO?

McKay hit this one out of the park! absolutely amazing thriller! the characters were explained in those details that paint a perfect picture of who they were. I read a bunch of Goosebumps as a kid and this was 10x better than anyone I read. I finished it in 3 short days. the description and ambiance of every scene was tremendous. I knew there would be some twist and turns, but nothing I could have imagined happened. Bravo!

Top Narration

Great book. The narration was fantastic, he gave each character their own voice and was great at conveying emotions.
