Informative and very good book highly recommend Avery Brundage was a Nazi and needs to be scrutinized

Compelling narrative!

I don’t always reach for a history title, but this was a gorgeous and thoughtfully written narrative that has current relevance. Kudos to the narrator too. I’m glad I found this book!

There are no easy answers....

A well researched, beautifully written book. The author presents a broad history of the Olympic Games during the early part of the 20th century and how they were impacted by the events leading up to and during WWI and WWII. It also presents the more specific history of intersex and transexual athletes during this time through the stories of a few specific athletes. The question of what constitutes a female athlete is throughly explored. The author does a great job of showing that as cut and dry as this question might seem on the surface, there are no easy answers. Even at the current time with the ability to do genetic testing, hormone testing, etc., where is it right to draw the line? Common sense would tell us that anyone who is "exceptional" is not like the rest of us. So how and were can we and should we place parameters on the what exceptions are permissible? A fascinating read that makes the reader think.

Really interesting stories about sex testing and the Olympics, great book. Gives good context for the modern day
