Publisher's Summary

The Narrows: A Harry Bosch Novel, Book 10: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience!*

Booktrack editions are essentially a new genre of digital storytelling entertainment.  Music and ambient audio are added to complement and enhance the audiobook experience. It is a synchronized movie-style soundtrack that complements the narration of existing audiobooks; the tempo and rhythm of the score harmonize with action, dialogue and the characters' emotional arcs.

FBI agent Rachel Walling finally gets the call she's dreaded for years, the one that tells her the Poet has surfaced. She has never forgotten the serial killer who wove lines of poetry in his hideous crimes - and apparently he has not forgotten her.

Former LAPD detective Harry Bosch gets a call, too - from the widow of an old friend. Her husband's death seems natural, but his ties to the hunt for the Poet make Bosch dig deep. Arriving at a derelict spot in the California desert where the feds are unearthing bodies, Bosch joins forces with Rachel. Now the two are at odds with the FBI...and squarely in the path of the Poet, who will lead them on a wicked ride out of the heat, through the narrows of evil, and into a darkness all his own...

*Booktrack is an immersive format that pairs traditional audiobook narration to complementary music. The tempo and rhythm of the score are in perfect harmony with the action and characters throughout the audiobook. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration, so listeners can enjoy every minute. When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.

Another well spun Bosch novel

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

YES

Who was your favorite character and why?

Bosch

Which scene was your favorite?

When Harry recognizes that the brothel dwelling suspect is the Poet

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

1 Road trip - YES

Any additional comments?

This is a classic Connelly offering that weaves together characters from several story lines, and rewards faithful followers with back story from each. The more familiar you are with Harry Bosch, Rachel Walling, Terry McCaleb ,and even the Poet - the greater the satisfaction with this novel.

Too much noise

There was way too much noise/sound effects/music in the background. It was very distracting.

Remake with Distracting background noise

This is Book 10. It is a re-release. The audio background music and noise is to loud. At times very annoying. I don’t mind some sound effects. But this is the whole book. It’s distracting from the story. Thank goodness with Audible I can return.

Took a star off for the production

WHY would you add sound effects (running water, a door opening) and music to an audiobook!!!!!!! It was very annoying. That said, the story is still pure Connelly and I enjoyed it.

Awful background noises

Would you try another book from Michael Connelly and/or Len Cariou?

The book would have been much better without all the background noise which made it difficult to listen to. Get rid of the music and noise and it would be a much better book.

Conflicted on Review

I am honestly very conflicted about how many stars to give this book. The performance by Len Cariou was enjoyable and the storyline was tight with the depth of character analysis I've come to expect from Connelly. Unfortunately, the review process does not allow for a rating of the producer. I am not sure if this was Linda Ross's first job as a producer of an audible book or if she was bored with her job and decided to take artistic liberties. In either case, Maya Thomas, as the executive producer should have stopped the ridiculous sound effects and over done dramatic music. I am listening to an an audio book, not a play on the radio, i.e The Shadow from the 1930's, because that is what this audio book sounded like. It features ringing phones, knocks on doors, rain and wind sounds (yes, really), and over the top suspense music. I found these sounds effects so annoying I almost returned the book. The producers did Mr. Connelly's work a great disservice and they owe him and his audience an apology.

The background music made it impossible to enjoy the story

I could not concentrate on the story because the background music was too distracting. I gave up after 5 chapters and returned the book for a refund. One of the pleasures of reading, or, in this case, listening to a book is to mentally picturing the setting and interaction between chapters. The background music and sound effects diminished rather than enhanced this experience. I could not rate the story higher because I was not able get very far into the story.

Always attention grabbing

I would have enjoyed this book so much more without the background music. I found the music very distracting. Michael Connelly NEVER disappoints.
