Story
Achilles de Dere is a stubborn knight prone to fighting - anywhere, anytime. If there is a punch to be thrown, it's usually from Achilles. When he first met Susanna de Tiegh, the sparks flew - and not in a good way. Susanna, an accomplished warrior in her own right and an agent for William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, refused to take Achilles’ bullying behavior. Friends feared they would kill one another. But an abject hatred of each other soon turned into something else. Now, Susanna is all Achilles can think of, even as he goes about his duties for William Marshal.

Story
1200 AD - In the time following the death of Richard the Lionheart and the ascension of his brother, John, to the throne of England, a plot against the new king is hatched from an unexpected place - deep within the bowels of The Lateran Palace in Rome. It is rumored that the Pope himself is behind it. It is a plot so dark, and so dastardly, that William Marshal needs men who specialize in dark and dirty games in order to save a king they all hate, yet a king that England desperately needs.

Publisher's Summary
The Executioner Knights are back, now with one of their own falling in love with a Welsh princess who holds the key to a renewed rebellion. Will love win out over his sense of duty?
Kress de Rhydian is a man on a mission.
The second Executioner Knight is given a very important directive - William Marshal is determined to make a match between a Welsh princess and a great marcher lord. With King John having recently married his daughter to the last Prince of Gwynedd, the Marshal seeks to balance that power with a strategic marriage of his own. Kress is tasked with protecting the Welsh princess, no matter what the cost, until she can reach her destination.
The cost may be his soul.
Cadelyn of Vendotia is the daughter of two powerful royal bloodlines. Having been raised in the house of the Earls of Arundel, she is more English than Welsh, and she has no desire to be part of a political marriage. An educated woman with a penchant for naughty poetry, Cadelyn is one of the last full-blooded Welsh princesses and a very valuable commodity. But there is a complication - the princess falls in love with Kress along the way, and in spite of himself, Kress cannot deny his growing feelings for her.
But there is a rebellion afoot, one tied to her betrothed. A group calling themselves the Rebels of Rhos, led by Cadelyn’s long-lost mother, is determined to use Cadelyn to feed their cause. They have promised lands and wealth to the greedy brothers of Cadelyn’s betrothed in exchange for their support of the rebellion, one that neither William Marshal - nor Kress - have any idea about. They will be taking Cadelyn straight into a firestorm if she makes it to Wales, and the center of this storm is a place called Mynydd Twywll (Mountain Dark).
It is the heart of the rebellion.
When the terrible plans for Cadelyn finally become known, it is nearly too late to save her, but Kress and her escort give it a valiant try. When reinforcements arrive from an unexpected source, Kress risks his life to take Cadelyn to safety.
Will his sense of duty and his loyalty to England win out? Or will the love of a Welsh princess be his downfall?

Outstanding Story
A book full of surprise and intrigue! Nothing The Queen of Medieval History and Romance writes surprises me usually, but this one did! There are so many twists, turns and a few real kinks in the paths of this story that I was shocked, in a good way! Funny in places, but always serious too. The hero and heroine are at first not enemies, but not friendly either, but things change quickly to make them friends. probably because he was so surprised at how smart, determined, educated and well versed in etiquette this starving waif of a novice in a nunnery was. Well she was the unknowing center of intrigue in plots of the gravest evil, from which he must save her! Fascinating and never a boring second. Kathryn Le Veque (along with Brian J. Gill, the narrator) has outdone herself once again! This is one I will read or listen to over and over again--it is a classic!

I have loved Brian J. Gill since first listening to The Crusader. Kathryn writes amazing stories and Brian is able to give it just the right amount of "English" accent and annunciation to take me to medieval times. This story kept me captivated and entertained. The Mountain Dark
I loved the story of Kress and Katy, hearing of their strife and subsequent love. Kathryn always fills her books with excitement, mystery, and a full range of emotions. Her characters have a depth that is sometimes lacking in a really good book. Brian J. Gill is also one of my favorite narrators. His 5 Star performances always keep me on the edge of my chair. By that I mean it is almost impossible for me to agree to give up my listening adventures to do the mundane, like housework and eating. 😀 I highly recommend The Mountain Dark, and eagerly look forward to being able k two hear Achilles story next! I have been hoping he would be the next Executioner Knight to fall victim to the powers of the heart! Excellent collaboration ok once again to bring us an alternate reality to step into and experience.
