Publisher's Summary

A twisty, compelling new audiobook about one woman's complicated relationship with her mother-in-law that ends in death....

From the moment Lucy met her husband's mother, she knew she wasn’t the wife Diana had envisioned for her perfect son. Exquisitely polite, friendly, and always generous, Diana nonetheless kept Lucy at arm’s length despite her desperate attempts to win her over. And as a pillar in the community, an advocate for female refugees, and a woman happily married for decades, no one had a bad word to say about Diana...except Lucy.

That was five years ago.

Now, Diana is dead, a suicide note found near her body claiming that she no longer wanted to live because of the cancer wreaking havoc inside her body.

But the autopsy finds no cancer. It does find traces of poison, and evidence of suffocation.

Who could possibly want Diana dead?

Why was her will changed at the 11th hour to disinherit both of her children and their spouses? And what does it mean that Lucy isn’t exactly sad she’s gone?

Fractured relationships and deep family secrets grow more compelling with every chapter in this twisty, captivating new audiobook from Sally Hepworth.

Not really a mystery/thriller, but VERY good!

A few random opinions:
The sample doesn't do this book or narrator justice .
Although I bought it because I am a lover of psychological thrillers and mysteries , and to me this wasn't really either one, it was so good, and had such great character development that I loved it .
And last but not least, if I had realized sooner that this was from the same author as "the things we keep" (I think that's the title of the Alzheimer's story), I probably would not have bought it, because I really didn't enjoy that listen , but to me, this is a much better story.
I highly recommend this book for lovers of really good books and great characters , regardless of genre

Best book I’ve read in a long while!

This book was really good! I listened to it in a day. Lots of believable twists and turns. I loathe the books I’ve read that focus on a twist so much that it goes to the completely implausible. This one is interesting in the family dynamics. The characters are all flawed some more than others. I didn’t hate any of the characters like some I have read/heard. But this one was great! Definitely worth a credit. Also the narrator was wonderful too!

great characters

This was a great easy to listen to book. Not a ton of characters to try and keep up with and the story flowed great. Part mystery, part heartache. Characters are very relatable, especially Lucy.

Could not put down

I love it when I find a book that is so hard to put down and I can get wrapped up in the characters. Highly recommend this book.

Another great book!

another great story and mystery where the story is central to the 'who dun it' of the mystery. central characters with depth. realistic supporting characters. another well done narration. couldn't stop listening until the book was done.

Excellent story & narrator

Very enjoyable and easy to follow while multi-tasking - editing photos, cleaning, laundry, etc. I really like this narrator because she is so good that I’m not distracted by shifts in characters; the transitions flow naturally. Would definitely read again.

A mother and daughter-in-law at odds and a surprising ending. Well worth your time. I enjoyed it.

OK read.

Unless I missed something it never said how Diana got her money. Started out well enough, ending just ok.

Overrated

I have no idea why this book received such good reviews. The story was boring, uninteresting, and without any payoff for the aforementioned boredom at its conclusion. Plus I find the whole sons love their mothers but daughters hate their mothers trope quite offensive and gender normative.

Loved it!

The title is initially what peaked my interest, because who doesn't love a vicious mother-in-law story? The story drew me right in, and I hated Lucy's MIL right from the beginning, and even as you got to know Diana (the MIL) I didn't expect it to to turn out the way it did. That is always a sign of a good book, when you can't figure out the ending. I think everyone can relate to at least one person in this book. The narration I thought was done very well, and I only just learned that the narrator is American, so if you come from Australia, you may not like the Australian accent portrayed by an American - but I thought she did a good job. Definitely worth the credit, a delicious summer read,
