Think Oliver Twist with Monsters

This vividly dark tale is filled with enough gore to make your stomach turn. Brimming with excitement and action, it is a narrative worthy of any Indiana Jones film. Gruesome and fraught with mental illness, this story is not for the weak at heart (or stomach for that matter). Ordinarily I would have thought this kind of story not one I would want to read, however, I found myself riveted to the very end. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this very entertaining series.

why so little reviews?

I have listened to this series more times than I can count. The storyline, the writing, the PERFORMANCE!?! It's so good. I love all the characters like family. They have a piece of my heart.

Awkward Advice for an Auspicious Author

Oh...my...God. So much alliteration. We get it. You like it, but c'mon. And the verbose viscous vocabulary. Hey, here's a wetnap. I think your thesaurus threw up a little.

The writing style drew me in immediately. The monsters are the stuff of night mares!

I really enjoyed this book. I am a huge fan of horror and this had a lot of things I look for in horror stories. It is very well written and very well narrated. If you are not a fan of horror or if you are squeamish this is not a book for you.

Great book, great listen!

I wasn't sure at first about the narrator's voice because it seemed almost too soothing and I'd heard this was a scary book. It was perfect though! He did a great job with the characters and the story was fun to listen to! I'm downloading the second one. Yancey has a new fan.

I liked the story, but I almost got sick a few times from the descriptions... evidently, the author is very good at making the reader visualize with his descriptions.

A must read for horror and psychological fans.

This book is a staple of the cryptid horror genre. The way science and emotion is weaved into dealing with monsters is flawless. Not once did I question the science and not once did I question, beyond reason, the actions of the characters. Everything flows and everything feels deserved. This is what horror is. I might even go as far to say it has lovecraftian elements- only in the way that a eleven year old is trying so desperately to understand the world around him when nothing begins to make sense.

The vocal performance of this book is phenomenal in its own right as well. I cannot picture any other voice coming from Pellinore Warthrop's mouth than the one Steven Boyer portrays here. I have the entire series on hard copy, but I will always read Pellinore's dialogue with Mr. Boyer's voice. It's just wonderful.

Rick Yancey can explore horror and trauma with such ferocity that this quickly became my favorite series of all time. Even the side characters hold meaning and depth and I've never once felt the need to skip parts because each sentence held my attention. Combined with Mr. Boyer's ability to bring emotion to the novel, it's a masterpiece.

Wonderful and terrifying

Blood and guts galore! Absurdly well-written and a nice, fast-paced plot pulls you in and doesn't let go to the very end.

This book has transcended its genre, in my opinion, and reads like a Victorian Classic. Definitely recommended.

Be aware going in, though, that there will be blood. Lots of blood. And other goretastic escapades. Not for the faint of heart.

The narration is spectacular, and well worth listening to.
