How can we summon a moment of lift for human beings - and especially for women? Because when you lift up women, you lift up humanity.

In this moving and compelling New York Times best seller, Melinda shares lessons she's learned from the inspiring people she's met during her work and travels around the world. As she writes in the introduction, 'That is why I had to write this book - to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live.'

For the last 20 years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: if you want to lift a society up, you need to stop keeping women down.

Melinda provides an unforgettable narrative backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention - from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace, and, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world - and ourselves.

Writing with emotion, candour and grace, she introduces us to remarkable women and shows the power of connecting with one another.

When we lift others up, they lift us up too.

Critic Reviews

"When you lift up women, you lift up everybody - families, communities, entire countries.... In her book, Melinda tells the stories of the inspiring people she's met through her work all over the world, digs into the data, and powerfully illustrates issues that need our attention.... I've called Melinda an impatient optimist and that's what she delivers here - the urgency to tackle these problems and the unwavering belief that solving them is indeed possible." (Barack Obama)

"It is a call for unity, inclusion and connection. We need this message more than ever." (Malala Yousafzai)

"The Moment of Lift is an urgent call to courage. It changed how I think about myself, my family, my work, and what's possible in the world. Melinda weaves together vulnerable, brave storytelling and compelling data to make this one of those rare books you carry in your heart and mind long after the last page." (Brené Brown, PdD, author of New York Times best seller Dare to Lead)

Important Albiet Robotic

I respect Melinda Gates' work so much, but wished I loved this more! I downloaded this after watching her interview with David Letterman on Netflix (would recommend!) and, while her messages and work is so important I'm ashamed to say I struggled to finish this. Perhaps it's her STEM background, I had just read Michelle Obama's similarly catagorised book before this and by contrast, Gates is much less of a lyrical, engaging storyteller. Despite great efforts to include the compelling, heartbreaking and triumphant anceedotes of the many strong women she has met and helped on her journey, somehow to me this book often read too much like a back to back stack of facts and figures. Nonetheless, I would recommend it to others for the significance of the ideas Gates articulates, I did finish it and I do believe it is an important message the world needs to hear.

Most impactful book I've listened too this decade

A book about empowerment and connection for ALL. Could easily be seen as a women's empowerment book but if you listen carefully the end result is a lift for EVERYONE. Haven't been emotionally moved by a book in a long time and was holding back tears towards the end of the book. Thank you Melinda for being so raw, authentic and honest about your journey and sharing it with the world.

Well done!

This book was recommended to me. I knew very little about Melinda Gates but had heard she and Bill were doing humanitarian work. This book gives insight to the Gates as a couple, their backgrounds and relationship and great detail of just what their work outside Microsoft is all about. An amazing read on so many levels and one that encourages us all to rethink world cultures towards women, poverty, basic needs for all in order to flourish.

The most pragmatic and comprehensible feminist

How do we nominate Melinda for a Nobel Peace Prize?! What an incredible account of practical and non-self righteous feminism and how to further accelerate humanity through identifying and breaking down gender biases, and allowing women to LIFT. I detested the word "feminist" and all it's stereotypical associations. This book does none of that but explains how women are the way of the world and how the oppression/suppression of girls and women, is stunting our growth of humanity. Incredibly comprehensive and Melinda's narration is fantastic. A must read for intelligent minds.
