A splendid reading of the classic!
Howard Pyle was the writer who put together stray tales of the English outlaw and created the narrative of Robin Hood we know today. His original novel is still great fun -- it took my kids (ages 9 & 10) a little while to get used to the language, but then they absolutely loved it. They've been acting out scenes and cracking themselves up. The narrator of this edition, Christopher Cazenove, is spot-on perfect for the material, too.

A PURE PLEASURE
This was a wonderful listen! The chapters (linked short stories) recount how Robin Hood comes to be an outlaw in Sherwood Forest, meets the key members of his band, and merrily adventures with them in and around Sherwood Forest in twelfth-century England. Howard Pyle's book has many impressive and pleasing points, among them:
exciting story-telling, rollicking lust for life, savory conversations, compelling songs, apt aphorisms, beautiful descriptions of nature, irreverent chastising of corrupt authority figures, interesting figures of speech (comparing, for example, the swift passing of Robin's anger to a breath on a window pane or the slow brain of a cobbler to a ball of unbaked bread dough), great humor (ranging from comical slapstick to witty banter and funny irony), and thoughtful movement from the light-hearted merriment of youth to the joy and grief of nostalgic maturity.
Christopher Cazenove reads with a clear voice and a charming manner and an effective range of accents and moods for the various characters, among them the good-hearted and stout Robin, the brawny and faithful Little John, the refined Will Scarlet, the querulous Sheriff of Nottingham, and the bestial bandit Guy of Gisbourne. Cazenove even remains in each character's voice as he sings the occasional catchy or lovely folk ballads. He infuses his reading with such meaning, humor, and life that listening to this audiobook was a pure pleasure that made me smile and laugh and finally moved me to tears.

Great Fun!
This is considered a "kid's book." But much like with The Hobbit, it's written so much better than a lot of adult novels today. Sign of the times, I suppose. But as a kid's book, this puts aside the grim and gritty of today's fare and gives the reader something fun and truly wonderful. I've grown up reading this book, and to hear it via Audible is a treat.
Each chapter is a self-contained event, often with the next chapter building making a callback to the previous ones as a reminder. This means that while it's essentially a group of short stories, there is a continuity for those who appreciate such things.
Readers who are familiar with Robin Hood in his many multimedia incarnations will probably be quite surprised to learn both Robin's "origin story" and some of the other tidbits here and there. Just because it's fun, it doesn't mean it doesn't have a bit of dark thrown in for added weight. Pyle doesn't talk down to the reader, and as the title suggests, there's more comedy and farce than anything else. This book is a classic, and it holds up. Highly recommended. It's a great read for anyone of any age.

A Delight!
This great classic is a wonderful read for anyone who loves the adventure and vivid characters found in the novels of Dumas or the wit and whimsy discovered in those of Twain. Reading Pyle's Robin Hood is like taking the two together in one mighty draft of fine literature!

Wonderful version
Would you consider the audio edition of The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood to be better than the print version?
I love the playfulness and characterizations in this performance! If you enjoy the Robin Hood myths, this is a fun version. And this can serve to answer all of the other questions listed here, so forgive me as I repeat myself.

The Merriest of Merry Lives
Never mind that the Sherriff of Nottingham should have been able to find Robin’s merry band just by following the smoke of their fires by day—or the glow of their fires by night. Never mind that Robin keeps recruiting new members, yet the band is always described as being “seven score” (no employee turnover stats or retirement packages are ever mentioned). Or that Alan-a-Dale, whose marriage Robin arranges at sword point against the wishes of the bride’s father, then joins that seven-score band and we never hear of his wife again (until, tangentially, at the very end). Or that, in a story begun in the reign of Henry II, people swear by St Francis (who was but 8 or 9 when King Henry died). Never mind all of that. Just imagine the following, read by the incomparable Christopher Cazenove:

You who so plod amid serious things that you feel it shame to give yourself up even for a few short moments to mirth and joyousness in the land of Fancy; you who think that life hath nought to do with innocent laughter that can harm no one; these pages are not for you. Clap to the leaves and go no farther than this, for I tell you plainly that if you go farther you will be scandalized by seeing good, sober folks of real history so frisk and caper in gay colors and motley that you would not know them but for the names tagged to them. …Beside these are a whole host of knights, priests, nobles, burghers, yeomen, pages, ladies, lasses, landlords, beggars, peddlers, and what not, all living the merriest of merry lives, and all bound by nothing but a few odd strands of certain old ballads (snipped and clipped and tied together again in a score of knots) which draw these jocund fellows here and there, singing as they go…And here is a country bearing a well-known name, wherein no chill mists press upon our spirits, and no rain falls but what rolls off our backs like April showers off the backs of sleek drakes; where flowers bloom forever and birds are always singing; where every fellow hath a merry catch as he travels the roads, and ale and beer and wine (such as muddle no wits) flow like water in a brook. I admit to being somewhat taken aback when a chorus of children announced this recording was part of “Audible Kids”. Even ersatz Medieval English is sometimes a tricky thing to follow, even for an adult versed in English Lit; no doubt children were more open to the truly wonderful—or willing to make an extra effort—back in 1883.
Unfortunately, not all is perfect in the land of Fancy. Christopher Cazenove’s singing—and there are many songs woven through the story—doesn’t come up to the level of magical sweetness promised in the text. But there I go again, plodding among serious things. The narration throughout is as much a treat as the story being narrated. Go ahead and enjoy. As Howard Pyle promises, everyday life will surely be there afterward, and no harm done.

Some good parts, some blah parts
I was a tad disappointed in this book. I had hoped it would be a lot more fun that it was, and it was fun in some places, but in others it was boring and there were things about the writing style that drove me absolutely bonkers.
Things started out pretty well. I thought the way the narrator talks to the reader in the prologue and asks you to take his hand so he can lead you on this adventure was rather charming. But by the epilogue when the narrator releases your hand to go your separate ways, I was more than ready to be done.
I’m sad that I felt that way because this book is a classic and Robin Hood was in interesting character, but WOW it was way longer than it needed to be. Like I said above, there were some fun parts. I enjoyed the episodic events that I would say are the most familiar to the general public: Robin Hood and Little John’s first meeting, the various archery tournaments, and King Richard pardoning Robin Hood. I also enjoyed the few chapters that involved Queen Elanor (sp?). While I wasn’t previously familiar with her involvement in the story it was just really nice to have a female character who actually did something. (Speaking of female characters, I don’t think I heard a single mention of Maid Marion in this entire story.)
On the other side of things, however, many of the episodic events in this story were repetitive to the point of becoming predictable and boring: You know how Robin Hood and Little John actually fought each other when they first met? Well, it turns out that happened with quite a few of the other merry men, too. It seemed like nearly everyone they met in Sherwood forest either fought Robin or Little John with staffs, or competed with one or the other in archery, or a battle of wits. I just got tired of it quickly, and even reached a point where my brain was totally tuning out while I listened, but when I tuned back in, I didn’t feel like I had missed anything because the same kind of things kept happening.
And then there were the songs. I don’t mind songs or poetry being featured in stories in general, but what I need from songs in stories is for them to either build the characters, build the world, or move the story along. In general, the songs sung by the characters in this book did none of this and they were also way too long. For example, there was one point where some of the characters just wanted to compare their singing voices and the songs they knew, and I literally had to sit and listen while three different characters sang three different songs. Not little samples of songs, mind you, they sang the ENTIRE SONG and the songs were just merry little tunes about silly things that had nothing to do with actual story. Then there was a point where Robin and his men spied on Friar Tuck when he was sitting there under a tree drinking and talking to himself like he was two different people having a conversation, and then those “two people” decided to sing a song where one “person” sang one part the other “person” sang the replying parts. It was funny at first and did build his character a little, I’ll admit, but then he Just. Kept. Singing. It truly reached a point where, when someone started singing, I automatically hit fast forward because I didn’t care anymore.
And the writing. Never have I seen such flowery writing outside of Shakespeare, not to mention so many repetitive descriptors in all my reading life! Nearly everyone was described as “merry” at some point in the book, and if I ever hear someone described as “lusty” or “saucy” again, I will scream and throw things.
By the time I got to the epilogue I was soooooo ready to finish the story, but it wasn’t even over yet! The epilogue was twenty minutes long on audio and detailed the end of Robin Hood’s life, which I totally wasn’t expecting. It was pretty sad what happened to him too, because after escaping his enemies so many times SPOILER ALERT: a member of his own family who didn’t like him tricked him so he ended up bleeding to death when he thought he was just being bled for medical/healing purposes.
What a way to go. :/ I did, however, find myself liking Robin as a person even more than before after this, because even as he died he was compassionate towards those who did him wrong. Though I would have preferred to finish things on a happy note rather than know how Robin Hood died, his attitude of forgiveness even in the face of death meant a lot to me and it earned him a lot of respect in my eyes.
All of that said, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I had hoped to. I didn’t hate it the narrator’s voice and performance were perfect for this kind of story and I didn’t find anything outright objectionable story-wise, but I just didn’t love it either. Seeing how I got so tired of it at one point that I wasn’t sure I wanted to finish it, I feel 3 stars I an appropriate rating.
Content advisory for those who want to know: I believe that, technically, this book is considered a children’s classic. There was no sexual content in this book that I can recall. There was lots of fighting, some killing, and some brief mentions of blood, but the descriptions of this violence were very flowery (like the rest of the book) and not graphic or intense. There is also quite a bit of drinking of ale and other alcoholic beverages that goes on throughout and people rarely seem to suffer ill-effects from it.

Outstanding
I learned of this book from John Senior's list of books at the end of the Death of Christian Culture. The older English of Pyle's composition is beautiful and was educational for my children. The stories themselves are delightful. Finally, I cannot praise the reader enough: just listen to a sample. He does wonderfully with different character types.

Fun & entertaining, if slow in parts
A great listen - with humor, adventure and a life lesson here & there! The old English storytelling can be a bit difficult to wade through sometimes but worth the effort. The narration is excellent, with well defined, engaging characters.

Robin Hood made me cry
A collection of gay and frolicking adventures with Robin Hood and his men. A bit repetitive, a bit dated, but a good time. And then the final chapter punches you right in the feels. I cried, and so will you. Dammit, Robin, I didn't sign up for that.
The narrator is great.

A marvellous tale marvellously told
This is my first time hearing the stories of Robin Hood, and it's thoroughly enjoyable.

Classic Robin Hood what could you add.
The narrator was brilliant bringing the old tale to life. It's essentially a collection of short stories broken into chapters. All of the classic characters are there but it's the first time I've read this book, I wish I had done so sooner.
