But human skin is not given. It is taken. At a price.
Generations ago, the realms fell to the Burn—the only way to purge a land so twisted by man that its harvests nourished the body while poisoning the flesh. Now, as the wilderness creeps through the ashes, what remains for nature’s tinkerers?
Pathway—the coveted alchemy that fuses skin to flesh, blurring the boundaries of species.
The Sahls of the Sea Barrows remake their bodies with the skin of beasts. They meld spiral horns to their skulls, embed the razor teeth of sea-beasts in their arms, and cloak their backs with the pelts of wolves. Women of wealth embellish their flesh with tufted tails, plumed wings, and serpent scales as elegant as black lace, their human skin no longer desirable.
Then they bear children. Creatures like Aeris.
Trapped in the flesh of a murdered man, Aeris joins a dogged crew of renegades, each cursed by the same cruel fate. Their goal is simple—to destroy Pathway, no matter the cost.
Aeris, born of stitched scales and sorrow, is a child of a society obsessed with Pathway, an alchemical process that fuses beast to body, deforming humanity in pursuit of beauty, power, or status. In this haunting world, it is no longer desirable to be fully human until someone tries to reclaim what was stolen.
When Aeris receives the skin of a murdered man, his transformation into a more “acceptable” form does little to erase the anguish beneath. Haunted by his origins and driven by a desire for truth and justice, he joins a band of rebels, each reshaped and scarred by the same cruel system. Together, they rise to confront a society devouring itself in pursuit of unnatural perfection.
Peach’s prose is lush, lyrical, and incisive. Her worldbuilding is both grotesque and mesmerizing, echoing the thematic weight of identity, belonging, and the terrible cost of conformity. While the story ventures into dark terrain, it's punctuated by hope, resilience, and the kind of unexpected ending that has become a signature of Peach’s writing.
Equal parts fantasy, social commentary, and literary fiction, The Melding of Aeris is a masterful tale that asks what it truly means to be human and whether we can survive the answer. Fans of deeply original speculative fiction will not be disappointed.
dystopian fantasy rich in literrary finess
