A mazy dribble through the recent history of European soccer, showing how shifting styles and influence have shaped the game. In the early 1990s, the Dutch footballing philosophy was worshiped across the continent. Then the baton passed to the Italians, who clearly boasted Europe's strongest league. But when France started winning everything at international level its national academy became the template for others, until suddenly, almost out of nowhere, Europe's most revered player and manager both hailed from Portugal.

David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters, and scientists. He discovered that in most fields - especially those that are complex and unpredictable - generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. Generalists often find their path late, and they juggle many interests rather than focusing on one. They’re also more creative, more agile, and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see.

Inverting the Pyramid is a pioneering soccer book that chronicles the evolution of soccer tactics and the lives of the itinerant coaching geniuses who have spread their distinctive styles across the globe. Through Jonathan Wilson's brilliant historical detective work, we learn how the South Americans shrugged off the British colonial order to add their own finesse to the game; how the Europeans harnessed individual technique and built it into a team structure; how the game once featured five forwards up front, while now a lone striker is not uncommon.

Publisher's Summary
From the post room to the board room, everyone thinks they can be the manager. But how do you manage outrageous talent? What do you do to inspire loyalty from your players? How do you turn around a team in crisis? What’s the best way to build long-term success? How can you lead calmly under pressure?
The issues are the same whether you’re managing a Premier League soccer team or an FTSE 100 company.
Here, for the first time, some 30 of the biggest names in soccer management reveal just what it takes. With their every decision, remark, skill, and success or failure under constant scrutiny from the media and the fans, these managers need to be the most adroit of leaders. In The Manager they explain their methods, give examples of lessons they’ve learned along the way, and describe the decisions they make and the leadership they provide.
Each chapter tackles a key leadership issue for managers in any walk of life and, in their own words, shows how the experts deal with the challenges they face in an abnormally high-pressure environment. Offering valuable lessons for business leaders and fascinating behind-the-scenes insights for soccer fans, The Manager is an honest, accessible and unprecedented look at the day-to-day work of these high-profile characters and the world of top-level soccer management.

Scattered
As a coach listening to this, I will need to listen to it atleast twice. The information is superb, however it is scattered and tossed at you so fast. Huge details scattered without a lot of depth at the given time. The depth comes later, but it makes it hard to connect everything at the time. I feel once I listen the second-third time, everything will start to settle in. Performance is dry.

Good book brutal job of narration
This was really a very interesting and insightful work on English football managers. My big complaint is that they should've gotten somebody who was either British or they could've at least coached the narrator on how to pronounce a bunch of the names of the cities in the clubs that were in this book. He missed pronounced a ton of them. That said, the book is well worth it and was very very interesting.

You cannot be serious
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Getting somebody with a british accent that can pronounce the names of clubs and players. An American with no football knowledge, not an inspired choice.
Would you recommend The Manager to your friends? Why or why not?
Absolutely not. The worst audio book I've ever listened to. Whoever made the decision to allow that guy to narrate should be sacked now.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Couldn't pronounce a single club or players name properly. It was extremely annoying to start with but I began to laugh in the end but it ruined the book completely.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Manager?
All of them read by this guy who has the kind of voice a hypnotist would die for.
Any additional comments?
Please redo the book with a british narrator.

Decent content. Abysmal narration.
What disappointed you about The Manager?
A narrator who mispronounced names with shocking regularity. Bobby Carlton (not Charlton) Sow-ness (not Souness) Paris Saint Ger-main (not ger-man) keltic (not Sell-tic). Awful!
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Kyle Munley?
Anyone who knows the first thing about football!

Awfully read
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The reading in what could be best described as a sat nav voice being replaced for a fluent reading.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would not have.
What didn’t you like about Kyle Munley’s performance?
It was comparable to a cheap sat nav, football teams pronounced incorrectly.
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It was factual.
Any additional comments?
I would probably recommend this book to purchase and read however the reading was truly awful. Filled with fact and content for the football enthusiast, but remaining focused near impossible. The man could not even say Celtic frustrating at best.

how was Kyle Munley allowed to be narrator? He could't pronounce single player / manager surname or name of the club.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Manager?
narrator pronouncing Celtic
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Kyle Munley?
Anyone who is not a robot and have seen at least 1 game of football in their live.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Manager?

Disappointing
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
Hard to listen to a reader who has no idea how to pronounce the names of the most famous football identities of current times. It's something of an uncritical hagiography of current football managers. I suppose the laws of libel make anything but hagiography feasible.
