Publisher's summary

A mother-to-be is awed by her own mother’s chaotic and unknowable approach to life and its natural mysteries in a smart, witty, and whimsical story by the New York Times bestselling author of One Italian Summer.

Growing up with an eccentric but loving mother who levitates for a living, Charlie always wondered, How does she do it? Defying gravity is no easy trick. Neither is motherhood. Now that her mother is leaving New York for bigger skies in New Mexico, it’s a new stage in life for both of them in an ever-evolving relationship that reveals the true magic of being a mother.

Rebecca Serle’s The Magician is part of Good Intentions, a riveting collection of stories about the instincts, fears, and fierce love inherent in motherhood from award-winning, bestselling authors. Read or listen to each in a single sitting.

Oh, the complicated relationship all daughters have with their mothers. A super short story with an uplifting ending.

Interesting...

An interesting short story but it felt like it needed to be longer. The characters were interesting enough to hold my attention and the narration was decent.

The different changes in the voice

Absolutely loves it. Would like a sequel seems like there could be more to finishing up the story. .

Short story greatness.

Being the first in a series of stories titled 'Good Intentions Collection,' has me hopeful for the next one in the series. Each story is done by a different author. "The Magician" hones in on a snippet of life - a daughter pregnant with her first child and her mother who is moving from New York to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Their first time so far away from each other. How Ms. Serle manages to pack in so much mother-daughter nuances of worry, irritation, knowledge, respect and love in a short story amazes me. For me, a clearly five-star read.

Note: Thank you Carlotta Brentan for doing a fabulous narration - really nuanced this relationship.

Great story

I really enjoyed this story! I do wish it was longer. I would love to see it made into a book.

Intergenerational Growth

I enjoyed the ambiguity and ultimately the love that comes out in the story of a child now mother to be herself and the famous mother now retiring.
