The year is 1140 and England is torn by the strife of civil war. Oliver Pascal chances upon a village raided by mercenaries and rescues the survivors: an orphaned boy, who is the illegitimate son of the old king, and his mother's maid, a young widow named Catrin. After escorting them to Bristol Castle, they are accepted into the household of Robert of Gloucester, and while Catrin finds herself falling in love with Oliver, she suffers a deep boredom at the frivolity of court life. Thus when the old midwife Etheldreda offers to teach her the secrets of her ancient art, Catrin agrees.

But the midwife's life is fraught with dangers, not the least Oliver's own personal fears which threaten their relationship, but also in the shape of two men, both killers and both of whom threaten the couple's lives. However, Catrin is determined to pursue her career and keep Oliver, and while England fights a civil war, she battles for her love and for her vocation.

The story was good if not a bit predictable. The main female character while strong was also plagued by bad decisions. The characters were well developed and real. One thing I found maddening was the author's use of 'grimace' which was used to ad nauseam. And why did the editors not catch this. This is the second book I have read by this author and the same problem was in that read as well. But overall not a bad read.

I love the author she writes classics. The characters are always so believable. Love the history too!

The suspense between whether Kathryn would stay or go with Louis as well as whether Oliver would kill him was good. I didn’t like that Kathryn was easily duped by Louis. Good ending. Wish it was historically accurate.

Great story but not significant

Historical fiction has been my favorite genre for 25 years. This book is in my top five favorite books! A very satisfying story with plenty of unpredictable events and wonderfully detailed characters. Great feeling of actually being there, with detailed atmospheric feel. Excellent story and perfect narrator for the characters/book. Love it! 💗

Good characters

I absolutely love the William Marshall books and have listened to them and the ones about his family multiple times and I have all of them in my library. When I started seeing new titles I assumed Elizabeth Chadwick was writing more books. After the third book disappointed me I did some research. The Marshall series are some of her later works and she is at the top of her game. These newer books are older and just not as appealing to me. They are still better than average, but after reading the others first I expect more history and less sex scenes.

Not one of her best

This book is based on violence and rape. The horrifying details were disgusting. I will not be reading any more books by this author. There is very little historical content or character development.
