Publisher's summary

An unforgettable story of loneliness, isolation and finding your way. Heart-wrenching, wise and wryly funny, this novel will make you kinder to those who are lost.

Miss Kaye works at The Institute. A place for the damaged, the outliers, the not-quite rights. Everyone has different strategies to deal with the residents. Some bark orders. Some negotiate tirelessly. Miss Kaye found that simply being herself was mostly the right thing to do.

Susie was seven when she realised she'd had her fill of character building. She'd lie between her Holly Hobbie sheets thinking how slowly birthdays come around, but how quickly change happened. One minute her dad was saying that the family needed to move back to the city and then, SHAZAM, they were there. Her mum didn't move to the new house with them. And Susie hated going to see her mum at the mind hospital. She never knew who her mum would be. Or who would be there. As the years passed, there were so many things Susie wanted to say but never could.

Miss Kaye will teach Susie that the loudness of unsaid things can be music - and together they will learn that living can be more than surviving.

Critic reviews

"My heart grew, then broke, then mended itself. A wise, funny, brave novel and a story that you will never want to forget." (Favel Parrett)

the loudness of unsaid things

worse narration ever. this author is morose and monotious and should not have read her own book.

monotonous

I found parts of this book entreating but the narrator just droned on with minimal.emotion or input I to the story. I feel like I missed the core of the book because of it. I really struggled to finish and didnt really follow the ending because I lost focus

Waiting for More

I had high expectations for this book but, sadly, I felt something was missing.

There have been attempts to draw parallels to 'Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine', however, this book is the poorer cousin of the latter. I was left feeling like we'd been read a laundry list of escapades by this character, as opposed to a story that went somewhere.

Unfortunately, I felt the narrator was almost worse than the story itself. Bereft of cadence, I found the reading stilted and dull.

Bravo Hilde

Wow!!!! What a debut!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I wept and laughed and learned. I want to read it again so I don’t forget the wisdoms of Susie and her dad.
I am changed for reading this book. Make it into a MOVIE, with Sam as the dad....(I’m not joking, I hung out with my friends at ‘the exchange’ so first hand visuals)
You should be really proud of this. It is a masterpiece!
Keep writing

Dreadful narration

I could not persevere. The narrator just droned on. Out source to the professionals Hilda.

Frustrating.

I am going against the grain here, but this was horrible.

Authors should not narrate their own books (in my limited experience).

I also dislike long reviews, so I am going to keep this short.

START RANT (minus spoilers)

I really wanted to relate to the characters, but I couldn't. The old mother was particularly horrid. Coming from someone that has experienced way more trauma than the main character, I am disgusted.
I adore flawed characters, but hated this.
Perhaps it was the writing style. Leaving everything DRY and vague.
I felt like the author was trying too hard to impress the reader the ENTIRE book. It didn't flow but kept tripping over itself.
The language Suzie uses is so inconsistent with her age (don't get me started).
And why the hell would someone who is supposed to truly care for the mentally handicapped refer to them in her mind as "Mrs Shrek" or "Newtons Third Law" or "Lego head"...????
This book was boring, rang false and screamed "Try Hard" from the top of its lungs. It wasn't even artsy.
END RANT

didn’t fall

I loved that this book didn’t fall into the usual traps of romanticising mental illness. It was raw, and rough, and realistic. Those struggling did not always wrap things up neatly. The experience of others was considered, reflected upon - but not judged. You aren’t told what to feel. As someone who has some experience in the “chronic” end of mental illness, I found this to be a beautiful, more earnest depiction.

So much promise , does not happen

Hard to read a book where there are no likeable characters. I did like the narration which was the only reason I persisted .
The book was disjointed and left out so much detail. I am still left wondering ....what and why ,felt very sad for the father not for the daughter

Engaging

Really enjoyed this book, only wished it hadn't concluded so abruptly.... perhaps a better link between the past and present would have been helpful.

I loved this book from start to finish. A great storyline, so much I could relate too. What a book.
