*A TIMES CRIME CLUB PICK OF THE WEEK*

Everyone in this town has a secret. But who holds the key to the loch…?

Twenty years ago, three young women disappeared, never to be found. The rumour to this day is that their bodies are still hidden deep within the murky Loch Aven.

When Eleanor, Clio and Michaela find themselves rained out of a camping trip in the Scottish countryside, they have no option but to book the mysterious house nestled on the banks of the lake. But little do they know that history has a way of repeating itself.

As secrets in the tightknit community begin to surface, and Michaela suddenly disappears, it becomes clear that something sinister is at play. And now it’s a race against time to unravel the mystery before the dark waters claim their next victim…

A claustrophobic, eerie and atmospheric thriller perfect for fans of Lucy Foley and Sarah Pearse.

Intriguing Setup, but Couldn't Stomach the Heroine

This book was intriguing enough to keep me listening until the end. Characters were interesting enough and I did want to know how the mystery would be solved.

The heroine of the book is just passive throughout the book. "I didn't know what to do" she repeats over and over, and she never does do very much. I kept thinking she was going to pull it together and figure things out, but she remains an emotional wreck throughout the whole book. There were good things about her and about the story, but her passivity grated on me, and after I finished, I wished I hadn't spent the time. Won't read this author again.

Slow, Wasted Potenial

This book could’ve and should’ve been very, very good.
If you’ve read anything else by Fran Dorricott you will know that this is an author with a true gift when it comes to creepy and mysterious tales.
When I saw this I was so excited.
It has all of the raw ingredients for a seriously spooky and thrilling story.
But nothing ever really “takes”
It just fizzles out, the characters are lifeless and flat.
The location (which in and of itself justifies pages of prose) is perfect, the setup is just right for an edge of your seat kind of mystery yet none of this ever really comes to pass.
It is soooo slow.
I had to make myself finish it just because I had to know what happened to these women but it ends up being equally lackluster.
From someone as capable as this particular author I would expect great things like her previous work in The Lighthouse.
This book falls way short, so much wasted potential.
I hope her next book makes up for this one, she’s truly gifted and knows how to create a creepy and engaging story,
It just didn’t happen this time, sadly.
The narration is really good, no complaints there.

This was just what I was looking for!

Mystery, horror, and a little hint of fairytale mixed in. A great listen from beginning to end.
