Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Robyn Carr creates an emotional and uplifting ensemble of characters in this rags-to-riches-to-rags novel about women, friendship, and the complex path to happiness.

In the aftermath of her financier husband's suicide, Emma Shay Compton's dream life is shattered. Richard Compton stole his clients' life savings to fund a lavish life in New York City, and, although she was never involved in the business, Emma bears the burden of her husband's crimes. She is left with nothing. Only one friend stands by her, a friend she's known since high school, who encourages her to come home to Sonoma County.

But starting over isn't easy, and Sonoma is full of unhappy memories, too. And people she'd rather not face, especially Riley Kerrigan. Riley and Emma were like sisters - until Riley betrayed Emma, ending their friendship. Emma left town, planning to never look back. Now, trying to stand on her own two feet, Emma can't escape her husband's reputation and is forced to turn to the last person she thought she'd ever ask for help - her former best friend.

It's an uneasy reunion as both women face the mistakes they've made over the years. Only if they find a way to forgive each other - and themselves - can each of them find the life she wants.

enough of the she saids!

The story line changed about halfway through and really lacked a smooth ride. it starts off with her dealing with her late husband and all his drama to being a housecleaner and dealing with other people's issues. it was very odd. I felt like I had to just finish and get through it. Overall, the characters are likeable, though a little annoying and petty. My main gripe, and it's pretty significant, is the amount of times the author would say 'he said, she said'. I had to fast forward conversations because it was so incredibly annoying. aren't there a million other ways to say it -she exclaimed, she pondered, she muttered, etc. i couldn't believe it made it past the editor.

Light and enjoyable.

While the book was predictable it was entertaining and kept my interest. It was my first Robin Carr. I will be listening to another.

Blown away again!

New characters but as good as virgin river series. Therese Plummer excellent narrator as always. Her choice of inflections emphasized characteristics of characters. She’s amazing

The Life She Wants

I enjoyed listening to this story about two women who grew up together and life matters pull them apart. I enjoyed listening and losing track of time with this great story. I look forward to listening to more stories from this author and this narrator.

Well developed story!

I liked being able to relate to Emma and Riley’s story. Not Richard’s part of her story but their friendship and intertwined lives.

A lovely escape

Robyn Carr is my go-to author when I need a light and uplifting read. She never fails! Therese Plummer's narration is always the perfect foil for the stories.

Another great story by Robyn Carr

What a giving story, it had its challenging moments, but it was still a story about forgiveness and love, and it will make you feel good at the end.
There are few authors that I automatically buy and listen to because they are real and uplifting stories with caring and loving people in them and Robyn Carr is one of them. I start with Virgin River and have read almost all of her stories and have never regretted it.
