Publisher's summary

Devious and valiant, Francis de Brangelton has never failed in any of his exploits. When the Duchess de Montmurrant employs him to investigate the embezzlement of her investments and to settle a grudge, he does not hesitate to recruit his friend Henri d’Arringnon.

But Francis has no idea of "Henri’s" astonishing secret. Henrietta d’Arringnon has masqueraded as "Henri" for so long that neither a military skirmish at the Savoy border nor guard duty in Versailles has exposed her. When her true identity is revealed, Henrietta’s and Francis’ friendship shatters, but duty still calls.

Will Francis and Henrietta fulfill their commitment to the duchess? And will the lure of fortune bring them together or further tear them apart?

No place for pride!!

I realize times were different, but Francis's reaction to Henri's truth was disappointing. I think is was a sign of that time that his "feelings" were bruised that he didn't see what was right in front of him until it was pointed out. Will his heart over rule his head and pride? I sure hope so. Marguerite had her own battles with a pig headed man she had affections for!!! lol. You have to admire both women, but Henrietta's courage and tenacity was amazing then and now. The proposal was too bland and anticlimactic , like an afterthought. I expected more pomp and circumstance. The ending left me with more questions. I needed closure not open ended thoughts. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job.

Slow start, but more than worth it!

The first couple of chapters were a bit tedious, though quite necessary, but the story quickly picked up afterward.  The action, drama, intrigue, and implied romantic intentions (and the frustrating behavior of those involved), set against the political turbulence of the time make for a very compelling story!  The various locations throughout France and other parts of Europe, as well as the "New World", add to the story nicely.  I very, VERY much enjoyed this book and am looking forward to finding similar books soon.
