The No. 1 Sunday Times bestseller!

Watch Will Trent on Disney+!

It begins with an abduction.

The routine of a family shopping trip is shattered when Michelle Spivey is snatched as she leaves the mall with her young daughter. The police search for her, her partner pleads for her release, but in the end…they find nothing. It’s as if she disappeared into thin air.

A month later, on a sleepy Sunday afternoon,

medical examiner Sara Linton is at lunch with her boyfriend Will Trent, an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. But the serenity of the summer’s day is broken by the wail of sirens.

Sara and Will are trained to help in an emergency.

Their jobs – their vocations – mean that they run towards a crisis, not away from it. But on this one terrible day that instinct betrays them both. Within hours the situation has spiralled out of control; Sara is taken prisoner; Will is forced undercover. And the fallout will lead them into the Appalachian mountains, to the terrible truth about what really happened to Michelle, and to a remote compound where a radical group has murder in mind…

Terribly narrated

Narrator made so terribly annoying sound, making Sara's mom sound like a horrible fairytale witch. I returned this book purely because I couldn't stand the sound and the fake and disguised accent of the narrator. Horrible horrible choise of narrator.

Good story, bad narrator

I only got this because the version read by Kathleen Early was unavailable in my region, but this is so bad. Everyones voice is read slower than the story in general, making every character sound stupid.

Not the usual standard Karin Slaughter

This was just not the usual Karin Slaughter standard and I'm a bit disappointed in this story. I cannot put my finger on what exactly was wrong with this book, but I usually devour Karin Slaughter's books and with this one, I was just "meh". It was an interesting story, with a lot of things happening, it was just missing some of the usual suspense. There wasn't much investigation happening, no real evidence were being uncovered, Faith barely featured in this book, and she is my favourite character in this series, perfectly offsetting Will's broodiness in all the stories. I did not really feel the suspense in this story and it did not really do a good job of building up to the final event.

not as convincing as the previous Trent stories

too much of jumping back and forth to the same moment from a different angle. The narrator is perfect when telling the story but almost unbearable when in direct speech. the voices she uses for the different charactes are - exept for Sarah's and Amanda's - ridiculous.

All the ingredients were there, except one...

I have long been a fan of Karin Slaughter and have read every book and short story. Ms Slaughter again did not disappoint and I enjoyed the story immensely. It kept me glued to my ear buds.

The only thing that did not work for me, was the narrator. The pitch of her voice was too high for some of the female voices and the attempt at male voices were contrived for the most part. Many of the statements in the storyline, were read as thoughts or musings, which detracted from the suspense the story was building up to.

All in all, great story, poor narrator.
