Not one of Herron's best

A disappointment - and that's coming from a huge fan of Herron's Slough House novels and novelas. Most annoying to me in the narration is the reader's singing the lyrics of old songs.

Great story, great characters and great narrator

It’s a great story this one. Intricately plotted, and Sarah and Zoe are back and ready for action if absolutely necessary. And of course action is necessary. It’s a slow-burn but we’ll worthwhile.

The narrator spoils the story.

Julia Franklin manages to turn Mick Herron's insightfully drawn characters into caricatures. Such a pity.

Impressive Chops

I have enjoyed all of the author’s Slow Horses books.

With this VR-ish door into the world of a PI, he’s displayed his unerring grasp of character in a new universe. I came away with the notion that his reach may be infinite.

Well done.

Creditworthy

This is a story that is listenable in spite of the reader. It is not brilliant as all the slough house stories are. There aren’t many laughs. The ending is fairly predictable. The beginning is slightly confusing. It is creditworthy but not nearly as good as Herron’s earlier effort with the same character, Zoe.

Very Complex Story

Great plot. Female hero characters really grow on you. The narrator is superb. Highly revommend.

Not one of his best

Too slow, too repetitive, and even for Mick Herron, too far-fetched a climax. And a very unsatisfactory cliffhanger at the end.

But, as always, entertaining.

Poor plot average reader stick with the Slough house series.

Far cry from the Slough house series. Annoying main character, silly plot and a very average reader.

Slow story telling spoils a good story

This is the first book outside the Slough House series I read. I read reviews which help lower expectations, the reviews were generally positive, especially regarding Mick Herron's able writing, I agree with that. But there was too much musing around, and although some humor is present, on the whole, the book was depressing. There was too much repetition of negative thoughts, endless mulling. I seriously missed the energy of Rod Ho, and that is saying a lot, because he is supposedly annoying beyond recovery. I feel the need to share this not so good review, because I was blindsided by the positive reviews I read.

Disappointed

Story weak.
Narrator was poor.
Not up to the standard of Slow Horses. Narration compounded the negative experience.
