Fathers, sons, and sports are enduring themes of American literature. Here, in this fresh and moving account, a son returns to his native Mississippi to spend a special autumn with his 95-year-old dad, sharing the unique joys, disappointments, and life lessons of Saturdays with their beloved Ole Miss Rebels. In the fall of 2012, after working on a presidential campaign that suffered a devastating loss, Stuart Stevens, having turned 60, realized that he and his 95-year-old father had spent little time together for decades. His solution: a season of attending Ole Miss football games together, as they'd done when college football provided a way for his father to guide him through childhood - and to make sense of the troubled South of the time. Now, driving to and from the games, and cheering from the stands, they take stock of their lives as father and son and as individuals, reminding themselves of their unique, complicated, precious bond. Poignant and full of heart, but also irreverent and often hilarious, The Last Season is a powerful story of parents and children and the importance of taking a backward glance together while you still can.

Great read. Made me miss my Dad and cherish time with my boys. Also had me looking up some of the people.

Great story telling - very relatable

If you have parents still living , this book will prompt you to spend more time with them. If not, then you will see the value of spending time with your adult children. If you love SEC as I do, then you will relate to this book even more. Be prepared to both be entertained and be reminded of what are your parents did for you. Awesome book and awesome narration!

Reminds you of the importance of family

Recount of Stuart’s father reminds me much of my own father. I too, so very blessed. WSU alum, always speaks of Butch, ‘feed em to Butch.’
Next month Cougars head to Ole Miss.
The menacing Butch has passed. Dad has not. He will be watching this game with great joy. Rooting for his team and praying for his country. Beautiful book Stuart.

Beautiful story of parent and child

I cannot say enough good things about this marvelous book. I’m from Mississippi and found the narrator was so perfect as a Mississippian who moved away. The story is heartwarming. And the humor is laugh out loud fun.

Fabulous

Would you try another book from Stuart Stevens and/or Dan John Miller?

I was very excited by the theme, the location and the relationship. It turned out to be disappointing because the characters were underdeveloped and the plot was weak. I was expecting more of a Pat-Conroy type novel. Wanted to like but not enough depth.

disappointing
