Publisher's Summary

Lord Tristram Radcliffe has a secret - he is the only dragon at the king’s court in Llangard. It’s a secret he’s kept from the knights he’s fought beside, from the ladies who bat their lashes at him, and from his closest companion, Prince Reynold. If it were to get out, he’d be banished to the Mawrcraig Mountains along with the rest of his kind, but the kingdom of men is the only one he’s ever known, and his heart lives in the stone halls of those who’d count him an enemy.

When the old king dies and Prince Reynold takes the throne, two visitors from the north throw Tristram into the middle of the ancient conflict between dragons and men. They put him on a collision course with the king’s shadow, Bet Kyston, a dangerous assassin who may want him dead or may want more of Tristram that he’d ever thought to give.

With the eyes of dragons upon him and a threat from the north creeping toward the home he loves, Tristram must weigh his allegiances before his dual legacies tear him apart.

Great beginning for a new series

I started this book because I enjoy M/M romance and dragon shifters and was interested to see how the authors developed these ideas differently from others in the genre. I stayed for those things, but even more for all the intrigue, political machinations and world building. It was interesting to see a dragon shifter in a world where no one knew that is what he was. Watching him try to navigate while keeping his secret in a time where war seems about to break out between men and dragons. I had expected a relationship between Tris and Reynold, not Tris and Bet but was very happy with this pairing or dragon and assassin. Both MCs have all kinds of secrets from the world and from each other and they are great together. I was expecting the ending to leave things unresolved so was not surprised or disappointed, just waiting eagerly to see more of these characters and watch this world develop. I love getting in at the very beginning of what I think is going to be an amazing series. Greg Boudreaux is never less than amazing and Lessa Lamb is right there with him in narrator quality here. Characters are distinct and their emotions and scheming comes across beautifully. Great story and great audible handling of it.

Intriguing story

I loved the various perspectives on events as they unfolded. Each character captured my interest in different ways and got me invested in their outcomes, romantic and otherwise. Great story, complex characters, interesting plot, had something of a George RR Martin vibe, but with LGBT+ leads, though I'm hoping fewer of my favorites will be dying as the story continues to unfold. Ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, can't wait to find out what happens next and where the story takes the cast next.

Didn't Work For Me

Epic Fantasy Novel, not MM Romance, but LBGTQ characters. But the characters and world building are good.
Well the idea of two narrator's sounded good, but I didn't expect it to be like this. I think it falls flat, I thought they would divide up the characters instead they divide chapters, according to make female POV. So characters voices changed from chapter to chapter, so you couldn't tell who was talking unless a name was stated.

Amazing!!

I’ve never reviewed a book before but it was just amazing. Every character was given so much definition, even the side characters.

Fantastic!

Holy cow, this one was so amazingly good! Loved the whole thing from start to finish! Well written, fantastic characters and exquisite world building, this one is for you if you enjoy complex stories with lots of intrigue. I always am happy with a Greg Boudreaux narration but this was a dual narration with a new narrator who did a super nice job! Cannot wait for the next one!

Wow

WM Fawkes and Sam Burns created an amazing world of magic. There is multiple POVs, and love all of characters telling the story. Chapter One was a bit confusing as you meet many characters, but before I know that did not matter. Lessa Lamb and Greg Boudreaux were brilliant with the different voices and emotions infused in the story. Definitely will be following the series as the series kicked of with a bang and the next one already sounds amazing.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Love this start of this series!

I had already this book and I absolutely love it. So to hear this audiobook just makes it so much better. Greg Boudreaux and Lessa Lamb brings so much life to all these characters. They make the world that W.M. Fawkes and Sam Burns has created so vivid that I feel like I am there. I just couldn't stop listening once I started for how amazing this audiobook is. I can't wait for more in this world.

Delightful epic fantasy with a multi-hued cast

I have read the book already, loved it, and picked up this audio to enjoy a re-read of sort. And it does not disappoint.

The fabulous narration by both Greg and Lessa makes the story even more vivid that the characters pop out and enrapture me. I particularly enjoy Lessa Lamb’s Gillian and Rhiannon. Delightfully posh with a hint of steel underneath. And Rhiannon’s voice when all seemed lost — it brought me near tears.

If you love romantic epic fantasy, you’d love this story. The characters are vivid and captivating and the story absolutely riveting. The fact that there's a myriad of romances set to bloom is a total delight. Can't wait to read/listen to the next book in the series. Highly recommended.

It's like a a M/M Game of Thrones

Listened to the audiobook and wow, mind blown.
It's like a Game of Thrones where one's sexuality doesn't matter but the machinations of dragons and deranged kings do.

Lord Tristram Radcliffe, the cousin of the new king, Reynold, has a secret. He's half dragon in a country that despises dragons. He knows if his secret is ever found out he will be banished - or worse. But the new king, his cousin, is becoming more and more unhinged and Tristram will do everything in his power to protect the king's son and the king's sister - but at what cost?

Bet Kyston is the King's shadow - Reynold's most trusted assassin. He too has a secret - a secret attraction to Tristram. A secret he keeps close to his vest because he's the king's dirty not-so-secret secret and Tristram is all that is good and noble and golden.

There are power plays for the throne, and another dragon in the throne room vying for the king's attention. But secrets have a way of coming out, and madness knows no friend or family member. Lines are drawn - what way will Bet Kyston go - loyalty to the king he owes everything too, despite knowing the king is mad, or will he choose a truly noble man with a noble cause?

The audible book by Lessa Lamb and Greg Boudreaux was fantastically narrated and kept me completely captivated. Can't wait for their reading of book 2!

WOW

This is the first book in The Fire And Valor Series. What a sensational book the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters wonderful. The many characters were developed and thought out. The narration was unique with a Male and Female narrator with all the POV’s it was done well. I can recommend this book as a good read/listen. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

Great Fantasy Tale

I was given a copy of this audiobook by Gay Romance Reviews in exchange for an honest review.

The premise is great. There's intelligent plotting and intrigue, alliances and relationships, etc, amid fantastic world building. The character building is a little shallow, but I'm sure that will be developed in future books in the series where the authors can focus more on that than setting the scene. Those elements give The King's Dragon more of a high fantasy with LGBTQ+ characters feel rather than a gay romance, though. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that...it's very good story telling, just some readers/listeners might need to adjust their expectation for what kind of adventure they're embarking on.

As for the performance, this was always going to be tricky given the story is told from so many POV. It was definitely ambitious to try ro pull it off with only two voice performers. For the most part it works, though. My issue is one of personal taste. Lessa Lamb's voice/performance is just too sugary sweet for me. The constant featheriness (is that even a word?) just didn't work for me and really grated on my nerves at times. I've enjoyed Greg Boudreaux's performance for other authors and he does a decent job here too, but overall I'll definitely choose to read the next book rather than listen to it.

Story: 4.5*
Performance: 3* (mostly for Greg Boudreaux)

Fascinating!

I discovered Sam Burns books in a giveaway a few months ago and since that moment I’d been reading a few of her books and I got caught in her wonderful writing style. Now this book, with the combined talents of her and WM Fawkes, is an exciting fairytale full of action and danger, a lot of intrigue and a fascinating romance (Not spoiler but WOW!). The complex plot with some pretty interesting twists and turns kept me at the end of my seat the whole time. In addition, hearing the story read by 2 voices, male and female according with the character's point of view was unique, Mr Boudreaux and Ms Lamb made an amazing job. WOW!

One of my new favorite series!

I cannot get over how absolutely blown away I was by this story. It’s romance light, but not absent, there’s a nice slow burn hate and lust filled attraction that pulled me in and delivered on promises with a fair amount of heat. But even without that, I think I would’ve loved this one for the amazing storytelling and wonderful world building alone. There’s a lot of POVs, and while I thought I would hate it, it honestly just made me that more into it. Both narrators did a spectacular job, with such a large cast of characters, it takes great skills to do so many unique voices and each narrator did it masterfully.

Intriguing and full of complexities

This book has it all.
Amazing world building, political intrigue, magical beings, mystery and suspense, divided loyalties and betrayals.
All told from multiple viewpoints that are so brilliantly interwoven you can tell where one ends and another begins.
The narrators have done a bang up job of bringing this vivid and vibrant tale to life..

Another excellent audio & the start of a new serie

Don't let the six...seven? POVs put you off this book. It's fantasy with humans and dragons, history and animosity between the two factions. Into this we have the hero of our story, Tris, half-human half-dragon and friend and confidant to the new king. There is jousting, murder, an elven ninja, courting, unrequited (or is it) attraction, a slow burn relationship, oh, and magic. And did I mention dragons. This is only book one and while it ends at a suitable point in the arc it is in no way the end of the story. And the relationship, while the attraction has been acted upon, is not going forward, although the heat and banter is still there.
I'm not used to dual narrator books but I think the female povs in this book (3) required a female narrator. I love anything Greg narrates and the female narrator did a great job too.

Good fantasy story, interesting (good) narration!

I enjoyed the world-building and the characters. There's a lot going on in the story - court politics, secrets, loyalties - all told from all the major players POV. This may seem a bit confusing when reading, but when listening, the different POVs made a lot of sense.
The romance is not the main focus of the story, but it's there.
This is my first M/F duet narration - great fan of Greg Boudreaux, he gives a great perfomance. Lessa Lamb is new to me andd she gave just as good a perfomance. Both made this a great way to enjoy the story! 🤗

OMG so good!!!

Game of thrones, eat your heart out! complex but not confusing, witty and intriguing. Steamy and saucy. and of course, Dragons!!!

it took me a little but to follow along with all the characters, but once I got it I was enraptured by all of them. Such a diverse range of characters, intertwined connections, and complex betrayals. I can't wait for more!

This is a true book you will have no choice but to become emursed in and no choice but to weave a path along with these characters. Brilliant writing! Fantastic narration!!!
