Story
All good things come to an end. And this is it: the last stand of the Ketty Jay and her intrepid crew. They've been shot down, set up, double-crossed and ripped off. They've stolen priceless treasures, destroyed a 10,000-year-old Azryx city and sort-of-accidentally blew up the son of the Archduke. Now they've gone and started a civil war. This time, they're really in trouble.

Story
Darian Frey is down on his luck. He can barely keep his squabbling crew fed and his rickety aircraft in the sky. Even the simplest robberies seem to go wrong. It's getting so a man can't make a dishonest living any more. Enter Captain Grist. He's heard about a crashed aircraft laden with the treasures of a lost civilisation, and he needs Frey's help to get it. There's only one problem. The craft is lying in the trackless heart of a remote island, populated by giant beasts and subhuman monsters.

Frey is the captain of the Ketty Jay, leader of a small and highly dysfunctional band of layabouts. An inveterate womaniser and rogue, he and his gang make a living on the wrong side of the law, avoiding the heavily armed flying frigates of the Coalition Navy. With their trio of ragged fighter craft, they run contraband, rob airships, and generally make a nuisance of themselves. So a hot tip on a cargo freighter loaded with valuables seems like a great prospect for an easy heist and a fast buck. Until the heist goes wrong, and the freighter explodes.

Publisher's Summary
Things are finally looking good for Captain Frey and his crew. The Ketty Jay has been fixed up good as new. They've got their first taste of fortune and fame. And, just for once, nobody is trying to kill them.
Even Trinica Dracken, Frey's ex-fiancée and long-time nemesis, has given up her quest for revenge. In fact, she's offered them a job - one that will take them deep into the desert heart of Samarla, the land of their ancient enemies. To a place where the secrets of the past lie in wait for the unwary.
Secrets that might very well cost Frey everything.
Join the crew of the Ketty Jay on their greatest adventure yet: a story of mayhem and mischief, rooftop chases and death-defying races, murderous daemons, psychopathic golems and a particularly cranky cat.
The first time was to clear his name. The second time was for money. This time, Frey's in a race against the clock for the ultimate prize: to save his own life.

Much Better!
After the shaky second book that couldn't quite decide what it wanted to be, the third book is finally back on track for me. Once again it's all about the crew of the Ketty Jay, their adventures and struggles! The first book captured my interest because of the ragtag bunch going on an adventure and slowly growing into an actual crew. The second book continued that, but it was also plagued by a romance that failed to capture my interest and investment, and it became the complete focal-point of that story, which is not what I signed up for. This third chapter goes back to the first books way of doing things, we're once again a ragtag crew on an adventure, and we expand on them as a group and their relationship with oneanother, they are the focal-point for the story as they should be. It's a very good adventure that sees our less developed crew finally get some spotlight and really deepens the bonds they have with eachother, the stuff you signed up for in the first book. Some parts are a little forced... Like Frey being an absolute moron, but I suppose it was established already in book two that he isn't very smart and can't listen to simple instructions, so I'll give it a pass. Quite frankly, the main protagonist is the least interesting of the crew on the Ketty Jay, but the supporting characters more than make up for his shortcomings. They are the real stars in these books and they are definitely worth staying for. Regardless, If what hooked you was the first book, then this book won't disappoint you.

The day the Jackal ends...
I'm hard pressed to even begin the process of listening to the next and last book. I don't want the ride to end. I genuinely adore these books: The plot, the characters, the dialogue, the growth of the characters, the narrator, they all combine to make a remarkable book and series. Rupert may be the single best english speaking narrator in the business. Strike that, Rupert IS the best. I recommend this book and this series to anyone who can hear.
