Don’t lose your head over office politics…The horrors of the modern workplace meet actual horror in a fiendishly entertaining short story from New York Times bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones.

When the lights go out and the slideshow begins, middle manager Jennifer has a disturbing vision: a headless colleague right across the boardroom table. Is it a trick of the light, or a vision of the future? She tries to brush it off and salvage the afternoon—but when her ex unexpectedly drops off her son at the office after school, suddenly her whole world takes an alarming turn.

Stephen Graham Jones’s The Indigo Room is part of The Shivers, a collection of haunting stories that reveal the otherworldly terrors all around us. Once you know, there’s no going back. Read or listen to each story in one unsettling sitting.

This short story was about a woman who suddenly develops pychic powers and a number of deaths happen at her workplace. Her son is dropped off and causes her distress. This was a confusing and scattered story. It seemed liked a number of deaths were happening in her office and people were trying to figure out what was going on. Then her son is dropped off and the story focuses on hiding him from her superiors. The sections with the annoying kid too way too much time and detracted from the story. This is my least favorite so far. Narration was good.

Scattered and Confusing Story

It was confusing and hard to follow. Almost just turned it off but stuck it out.

Barely made it to end

3.5 STARS. Gonna roll this up to four stars because it was well written and somewhat interesting, and perhaps because I know the author writes knock-it-out-of-the-park, terrifying fiction.

THE INDIGO ROOM is the second book in The Shivers Collection, but the first one I have listened to. Though it entertained me while I multitasked, it never quite grabbed me and was only mildly creepy. (Unheard of for a SGJ book.)

No complaints about the narration by Kyla Garcia. Nary a glitch or slip and perfect pacing at 1x speed, the way it's supposed to be.

Expected more than mild creepiness

The story was odd, but not unlikeable. It was different, but it didn't gel for me. It was unlike other stories by SGJ, which didn't detract from it necessarily. It is worth a read.

I really don't like ambiguous endings. Just tell me what happened. What was this hour for?
