Instant #1 New York Times bestseller!

“A mesmerizing read and a great detective story, yet sadly all true…With their book The Idaho Four, James Patterson and Vicky Ward have written perhaps the definitive account of the murders–a disturbing, necessary portrait of a killer and his victims.” –Guardian

“New revelations…James Patterson and Vicky Ward reveal new details and attempt to lift the veil of secrecy that has shrouded the Idaho college murders case for more than two years.” –Good Morning America

"This is much more than a true crime book. It’s a vivid exploration of the range of human response when faceless terror strikes. It’s a portrait of America in this polarized moment." –Town & Country

"A lot of brand-new reporting. Clears up a number of mysteries." –Morning Joe

The murders of four innocent college students attending the University of Idaho left us all with so many questions. Now, after more than 300 interviews, James Patterson and prize-winning journalist Vicky Ward finally have the answers.

We know what it was like to live in Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022, the day of the cold-blooded killings. We know what the local police and FBI did right. And what they did wrong. We’ve learned so much about the four heartbroken families—the Mogens, Goncalveses, Kernodles, and Chapins. And we have the backstory for Bryan Kohberger, brilliant grad student, loner, apparent incel.

Now you are the jury. The evidence is in.

You’ve watched the Prime documentary, One Night in Idaho, now listen to the “clearest profile yet of the twisted quadruple killer and his motives” (New York Post).

I’m not a terribly sentimental or emotional person, but this book really got to me. Like everyone else in the world, I was stunned, horrified and saddened by what happened to these kids. after listening to this book and hearing more about who they were and their families it made me so sad. I normally listen to mysteries and thrillers on Audible. Typically, I like to just listen to be entertained and not to learn anything but once in a while, I’ll listen to a true crime book or a biography and perhaps that’s why this one hit home even more. Really sad. I hope these families get some sort of closure or justice and I hope the killer either has a horrible time in prison or gets beaten and killed by someone in there in the worst and most painful way possible.

So touching

I enjoyed the amount of respect for the victims and families and focus on what the murderer took away, including 4 beautiful young lives

lots of details presented with respect & compassion for victims

Well done, respectful of victims and families. It's the only book about this local tragedy I felt comfortable reading.

The one thing that rubbed me the wrong was how obvious the digs were at the Goncalves, just by Fry and Bill Thompson comparing them to how wonderful Stacy Chapin was. “All the other familiy’s handled it differently” , and then pointed out only the Goncalves.
As if it was all the Goncalves fault that they were being rushed. Maybe they did go too far sometimes, but look at what these people have been through!!And then to be told nothing?!
The police are the ones who held back even the cause of death. What reason would there be to hold back that a knife was involved? They didn’t have to say anything else. But the coroner came out? What a mess.
Only others who raved about how wonderful the police were pointed out in the book.
Not everyone is so layed back and just wants to move on after their loved ones are was hacked to death.

Good book, except..

Like the sequencing, story telling of the facts. Timely for information known at the time.

Factual, timely

This book was so well researched and thought out; it brought the teens to life and painted the picture of this horrible tragedy and all who were involved especially the parents and their different viewpoints

Comprehensive, compelling

I thought this was a good book to learn more about the victims and their families. The only part I didn’t like was learning about the murderer’s past, so I skipped those couple of chapters. From the parts I listened to it was all we already heard and I felt like he shouldn’t have gotten a history in this book. Maybe that’s just me. Narrator was great. Her voice just goes deep like she’s talking about a guy when she does a male voice. All in all, it’s nice that it’s more about the victims and the impacts they left behind. Maybe they all rest in peace.

Good getting to know the victims
