Publisher's Summary

A departure from London’s normal tales of the frozen North, all of these tales take place in the islands of Hawaii. The tales deal with racial issues, family relationships, leprosy quarantines, missionaries, and the diverse people who make their homes on the beautiful Hawaiian islands.

London traveled to Hawaii in the late 1800s and early 1900s, including an eight-month stay shortly before he died in 1916. He had a fondness for the islands that is apparent in the rich descriptions in these tales.

LOVE THIS BOOK

London is one of my favorite authors. I wish I had had the guts to travel like him. These stories are based on stories he heard while traveling in Hawaii. As always, Grover Gardener does a great job as narrator.

Lessons from Hawaii

London unpicks the customs, rituals and culture of Hawaii but broadens out to universal themes - class differences, exile, love. This observation of ethnocentrism in one tribe is a warning we can all heed:
"Lacking gloriousness in themselves they deny gloriousness to all mankind...Never having seen the stars they deny the stars."

Not my kind of book.

I was disappointed, when I read this book. The stories are well written, but it is not a univers I can relate to. Jack London has written far better stories from the far North.
The narrator is not good and has a flat language.
