No other institution, except possibly the papacy, has more greatly influenced the church and the larger history of the Western world than the ecumenical council. Most of us, however, know little about it. This course is designed to take you through the fascinating history of the ecumenical (church-wide) council, from its first appearance in Nicaea (325) through Vatican Council II (1962-1965). This 12-part audio series explores the deep issues of faith and the sometimes curious issues of clerical behavior with which the councils dealt.

Everything needed to understand and appreciate the traditional Latin mass! Extremely informative, yet very easy to listen to! This book explains prayer by prayer, what happens at the Latin Mass and why. Why is the Mass in Latin, the use of silence, bells, specific colors, etc. - and how we participate. Reviews are very enthusiastic! Ties in beautifully with Pope Benedict XVI's motu proprio opening the door to the universal celebration of the Latin Mass.

Whether taken as a book of faith or a cultural artifact, the New Testament is among the most significant writings the world has ever known, its web of meaning relied upon by virtually every major writer in the last 2,000 years. Yet the New Testament is not only one of Western civilization’s most believed books, but also one of its most widely disputed, often maligned, and least clearly understood, with a vast number of people unaware of how it was written and transmitted.

Despite the absence of any direct mention of Christ or the Catholic Church, Tolkien described his work as "fundamentally religious and Catholic." He was able to infuse his fictional world with theological orthodoxy through his creation of myth and a world order. Endowing his protagonists with Christian virtues, he also incorporated themes of grace and mercy.

Informative, interesting, well read.
Concise and well presented. Fairly neutral bias, although secularists, and Protestants may disagree with the author.
The most in depth lectures are in the beginning. He expounds on the early church, and even presents non catholic arguments. As it progresses the later lectures focus less on individuals as the focus is on the mass not Popes. This left me wanting to know more about individual Popes... All that aside the presentation is given in a concise manner in later lectures which left me wanting more details.
Overall I found the historical quality of the lecture very informative. You will learn about traditions that have survived, and others that have been discarded. You will learn about the mass, and how it evolved. You will even learn about how the Catholic mass influenced the worship of Protestant branches that formed relatively early on in the Protestant reformation era.
Well worth the purchase. Definitely will listen to at least a second time.
