Publisher's summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Weekenders comes a delightful new audiobook about new love, old secrets, and the kind of friendship that transcends generations.

When 99-year-old heiress Josephine Bettendorf Warrick summons attorney Brooke Trappnell to her 20,000-acre barrier island home, Brooke is puzzled. Everybody in the South has heard about the eccentric millionaire mistress of Talisa, but Brooke has never actually met her. Josephine’s cryptic note says she wants to discuss an important legal matter, but why enlist Brooke and not the prestigious Atlanta law firm she has used for years? Brooke travels to Shellhaven and meets the cagey Josephine, whose home is a crumbling pink mansion at the edge of the turquoise sea.

Over the course of a few meetings, Josephine spins a tale of old friendships, dark secrets, betrayal, and a long-unsolved murder. She is hiring Brooke for two reasons: first, to protect her island from those who would despoil her land, and second, to help her make amends with the heirs of the women who were her closest friends, the girls of the High Tide Club - so named because of their youthful skinny-dipping escapades - Millie, Ruth, and Varina. To fulfill a dying woman’s wishes, Brooke must find Josephine’s friends’ descendants and bringing them together on Talisa for a reunion of women who’ve actually never met. But in doing so, Brooke unleashes the makings of a scandal that could make someone rich beyond their wildest dreams...or cause them to be in the crosshairs of a murderer....

The High Tide Club is Mary Kay Andrews at her Queen-of-the-Beach-Books best, a story shrouded in mystery, Spanish moss, verandah cocktails, 1940s dinner dances, love lost, and possibly...love found.

Too politically correct

I usually enjoy her books, and consider myself open-minded. However, I found the author was being too politically correct in this book to the point where she went out of her way to make her points (i.e. social justice, calling a remark about an old man referring to black people as “colored” as being racist...even though that was the description used in that day). She painted the picture of the old woman (who was a Republican Nixon supporter) as being insensitive to the needs of the black people whose land she purchased from them decades ago. Just not my type of book. I prefer authors that are not trying to obviously make their own statements.

Not my favorite

I usually really enjoy Mary Kay Andrews but this book is annoying me like crazy. I can't decide if it's the narration or if it's the story--I'm torn. I'm not finding it interesting, and the narrator, who I usually enjoy, is horrible for this.

Very frustrating all around

I got all the way through, but it was painful. The story was long and redundant. There are so many times that I thought Brooke (the main character) was annoying and made decisions that made my stomach turn. The narrator made many of the characters sound whiny, and it was hard to listen to.

Overall a good story but...

the story was for the most part enjoyable with some good twists and turns. unfortunately one character doesn't seem to know her history even though she is a professor. I can't share more without spoiling the story but I wish Mary Kay Andrews had paid more attention to the characters reaction in parts - it was 1942 in the South not 2018.

interjected left-wing political views

So disappointing. All I wanted was a pleasant summer read, not a novel which was laden with political references that were offensive to me in the context of what was supposed to be light reading, not political commentary. ughhhhh. No more Mary Kay Andrews for me.

Probably her best book ever!

Great book. Loved the complexity of the story. Could have done without the political undertones. I don't care for personal biases in fiction

Maybe better read than listened to.

In this book, MKA takes a character from Save the Date (a young female attorney) and focuses half the story on her while developing a backstory for one of her clients, a wealthy elderly woman. As an attorney myself, I just can't get past the egregious errors in legal practice that the main character commits. First, there is a huge conflict of interest that should get Brooke disbarred. While recognizing the problem, Brooke agonizes, then sails blithely past the issue without explaining how she planned to deal with it. Second, any attorney owes a duty of loyalty and a separate duty of confidentiality to her client, yet Brooke irresponsibly blabs her client's confidential information to everyone she talks to about the case. The author really, really should get some advice before writing about about a profession.

What is also bothersome to me is that the narrator uses the same voices that she has used in other books. She has one voice for young girls, no matter if they are 5 or 14, and another voice for any woman over 50 (kind of quavery and old). I keep hearing the voices that she used for characters in other MKA books, and it's disconcerting. It takes great talent to give everyone an individual voice, and this narrator does not have that talent.

So, if you are not a professional, especially a legal professional, and haven't listened to other audiobooks by MKA, you may find the story interesting and well read. I can't get past the main character committing ethical violations right and left.

Too liberal

Great story with a political slant that took from a beautifully woven story. I love this authors stories and descriptive settings. I waited for this book for months and with the exception of pushing a political agenda the story was wonderful he told

Couldn't finish

A dull story and characters that I simply couldn't finish. This one wasn't the fun summer read I expected from MKA.
