The Heretic's Daughter

From the minuet I turned on my Zen to listen to; The Heretic's Daughter; I was captured. I enjoy reading Historical Fiction and this is to be one of the best. I went on the internet to find other book by Kathleen Kent only to find that this is her first book. I sure hope that she continues to write. I am looking forward to reading her next book. Mare Winningham was an excellent narrator and brought the story to life. I would highly recommend it to everyone.

Tragic History

Bigotry, greed, envy, arrogance sew the seeds of dark shameful deeds done in the name of righteousness. Won't we ever learn. A tale for today.

The savagery of man

We forget the atrocities that men can bring on to fellow man/women/children through their ignorance and hatred. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was well read and a good reminder of our past.

Engaging Portrait of Old Salem

I really enjoyed this novel--highly recommend it. The narrator, 11-year old Sarah Carrier, lives in Andover, MA at the time of the witch hunts in nearby Salem. The novel is based on a true story: Sarah's mother Martha was hanged for witchcraft, and she and her three brothers were also charged. The novel not only presents the facts and a wonderful portrait of the struggles of everyday life at the time but also creates a moving portrait of a daughter coming to understand her parents and the true nature of their love for their children. I listened to the book on audio, read by Mare Winningham; very nicely done indeed.

Native of Danvers (Old Salem)

Historical fictions is one of my new favorites. It was delightful to read about familiar places I have been and most importantly learning more about an historical event which happened in my home town and never really took the time to learn or investigate the truths of the debacle. The atrocities which happened to the lives and families of the people accused of witchery in Old Salem is truely astounding

Excellent book

Very well read by Mare Winningham. Every time I read about the Salem witch trials, it just boggles my mind, what mass hysteria can do. Excellent novel.

Glimpse of History

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Salem Witch trials. Well read and the story was engaging. I have recommended this to friends and bought a copy to put in our local high school. The Wolves of Andover is a prequel to this book written by the same author. I plan to read it.

Great story, excellent reader!

Kathleen Kent writes a great and compelling story about an incredible time. Although the Salem witch trials of been covered copiously, Kathleen Kent brings it into sharp, personal focus in a way that so compelling it's hard to put the book down. Marr Winningham brings the story so poignantly and personally to life you feel as though Sarah is there with you and you are hearing the story directly from her. It is such a privilege to listen to this great actress read aanything! Bravo!

I enjoyed listening to this . It pulls you in from the beginning and the narrator is one of the best I have heard. Excellent read.
