Erik Keston, son of the Keston Real Estate empire, knows what it takes to be successful. Despite his inherent wealth, he holds his own. He works hard, he's grounded, he's brilliant. He's also secretly in love with his best friend.

Monroe Wellman lost his parents three years ago and never grieved, never recovered. Inheriting the family company and wealth means nothing, and his spiral of self-destruction is widespread and spectacular. Dubbed Sydney's bad boy, he spends more days drunk than sober, and the only person who's stuck by him through it all is his best mate.

But when Monroe hits rock bottom, Erik gives him an ultimatum, and his entire world comes to a grinding halt. It's not until the haze lifts that Monroe can truly see what he's been searching for was never in the bottom of a bottle. It's been by his side all along.

Contains mature themes.

I love every little thing about this audiobook. It’s so relatable and the character development was very well paced and satisfying. The storyline was really good and done to pure perfection. Cheers to both the author and narrator.

Closest thing to real life

Erik and Monroe have been best friends for years, but after Monroe's parents die, he went overboard with drinking and partying and was losing Erik with his antics. Erik gives him an ultimatum and Monroe can't figure out what to do and starts having panic attacks. This is a story about addiction and love and how to deal with life. Love all the characters!

I cried reading this because it really made me feel the pain of both characters when he had to hit rock bottom so he could make the choice to actually work on himself. It was so sweet how they yearned for each other from afar. Seeing the growth was beautiful and it unexpectedly helped me in real life. A very emotional book.

Heartbreaking at first but so worth it

I will start with I didn't finish the audiobook. the story was not for me, I was looking for a romance story and I think this might have a romantic story but the ground work stage was too much for me. I didn't realize how intense this story was going to be.

this book is for people who aren't bothered by addiction and the relationship dynamics that come from the addiction before and after treatment and recovery.

I think the author did a good job showing how messed up and in the thick of it people who are addicted and the people who watch out and take care of them can get. the story in the beginning is a little slow building to the two main characters separating while one goes into sobriety treatment.

slow burn and deals with intense themes

I love all of NR Walkers books and this is no exception. The narration was too notch. I'll be listening to this again.

Wonderful!!!

Good but very predictable. It was still a good listen. All of Walker’s other novel have been stellar.

Good Story

I love this author's stories and I love how she tackles difficult subjects. some readers complained that this is not a romance, but I disagree. I love how this stort shows how difficult addiction is and how hard it is to love an addict.

I wish there had been better editing in this book and if the editor or proof reader was paid, I would have gladly done it for free (OCD, sigh). I was cringing a lot of the time where the conversations just didn't add up to the events.

Also, this narrator added the emotions of a stick figure to the characters and, the really broken, heartfelt parts of the story. It spoiled the audio book. I will read this again, but on my Kindle. Where ever Joel Lesley was, he was sorely missed in this adaptation.

Really bad Narration

I usually enjoy this author, but this book felt very heavy-handed and awkwardly paced. The narration did not help, as it was stilted and a bit William Shatnerish at times. a solid B- effort, but N.R. Walker has many books that are more immersive and sophisticated.

Bit of a clunker from this author

I really enjoyed this one! It pulled me in from beginning to end and was an emotional read. It felt very well done and realistic for the situation and figuring out that you are an alcoholic and going into recovery. Erik and Monroe are best friends and have been since they met in college and when Monroe lost his parents, things started to go south for him. Erik has been there for him and knows he is in love with him but doesn't think that Monroe has the same feelings. Monroe never really dealt with all the emotions from the death of his parents and has turned to alcohol to deal with the emotions and thoughts. Things are coming to a head and Erik has reached his limit of being able to watch Monroe make these choices and essentially killing himself. It causes Monroe to come to a realization of what he is doing and answer the question of what he wants to lose as Erik gives him a choice to get help or he can't be around anymore. Things weren't easy and Monroe is stubborn. He has lots of things to deal with and work through and I enjoyed seeing him make the changes and choices necessary as he detoxed in private at the Keston's beach house and seeing the ties and connection between the two men and how they need each other in their lives but still having to take some separation and time in order to heal and be in a better place. This story is emotion and due to the situation a little bit more of a slow burn. It was engaging and a good read.
The narrator did a good job with the story and the characters and bringing them to life.
