Sometimes, the worst lies are the ones we tell ourselves. They build and build into a façade of transparency and false truth that we present to the world...until it comes crashing down because of that one person who sees right into you. “Just one more time.” “It’s not even like that.” “I’m not tripping about it.” “I’m fine. Really.”

Even the saved struggle when navigating their way through love. This much could definitely be said for the Fold family's oldest child, Angela. Perfection was the main objective when it came to Angela. She was stubborn, strong-willed, and completely incapable of relinquishing control, at times risking her own happiness to preserve the image of what others thought she should be. Angela must figure out which way to go after leaving a toxic marriage. And she may or may not find refuge in an equally stubborn alpha male by the name of Damien Christopher Briscoe.

Looking for love was never on Chad's list of things to do, until he held Taya in his arms on a dance floor and watched God laugh at his plans. Vivienne is one of “those” people, the kind who believes in love at all costs. Broken hearts are a natural product of that, and Viv is used to dealing with it by simply ignoring the ache and moving on to a new love. Publisher's Summary
The magic of Potter Lake strikes again when Evonne Girard, cosmetologist and obsessed podcast fan, meets Taj Wright - registered nurse and musician - following a nasty fall in the parking lot at the Curl & Dye. There are jokes, there is flirting, lingering stares abound...but neither thinks they’ll see the other again any time soon.
When Evonne takes a step toward adulting and moves out of her parent’s home, she discovers that the cute house she’s renting belongs to the handsome, sexy nurse with the eyes she can’t forget. But she’s not in Potter Lake to meet a man. She’s on a mission to prove to her parents that she isn’t the failure that showed up on their doorstep 10 years ago.
Taj is delighted to rent his guest house to the pretty, snappy former patient he can’t stop thinking about. Potter Lake was a place to run when his dream died, a haven to start over and give back what was given to him. When the opportunity to live that dream again rolls around, Taj isn’t sure that he wants it to come true.
Evonne and Taj are forced to live in close quarters during a severe storm and quickly become more than landlord and tenant. When the same storm drives them from Potter Lake to a beachside retreat, worlds collide.
One shared secret could change the trajectory of something beautiful.
On a rainy night in Georgia, two hearts meet. They’re never the same again.

From Neighbors To Lovers!!!
I really didn't want to like The Guy Next Door but, I did. Evonne and Taj were so likable, I couldn't help but love this book. They were so engaging and their attraction to one another was genuine. Both of them had smart mouths and their comeback for each other was hilarious. I don't know who I dislike most. Terrell or Mama Rhonda. No, I take that back. I couldn't stand Terrell's azz the most. Whew chile! I wanted to fight him like I was a man. As I said before, I really hope this series doesn't end with Evonne. I didn't think she was a popular enough character in book one to merit her own book. You could count the scenes she was in so, I'm real confused how she was next in line. It just made more sense for the next book to be about TC. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll eventually get her story. 🤞🏾🤞🏾

Sexy/sassy/funny dialogue for the win!
I’ve read all of the Potter Lake books and this is my favorite by far. The story line and characters are well developed, the writing is very strong, and the chemistry between the main characters is undeniable. The meet cute that starts off the book really sets the tone for the banter the main characters engage in throughout. I love that both Taj and Evonne have interesting personalities and when they come together their interactions are a thing of beauty. I have said this in other reviews of D.L. White books, she masterfully writes sexy/sassy/funny dialogue that really aids in being able to imagine these are real people. I am looking forward to reading more of her work in the future, because her growth as a writer is huge between Brunch at Ruby’s and this book. I listened to the audiobook after I had already read and reviewed the book and I was honestly disappointed. While Sharrell Palmer is a talented narrator, I think that this book could have been enhanced by having a male voice for the chapters from Taj’s perspective or even a female narrator who is more of a voice actor and provides different voices for each character. There are also a few editing issues where passages are repeated that are distracting while listening. That being said I wouldn’t say the audiobook is bad, it’s just not as good as it could have been.
