This first novel from Nebula Award-winning short-story writer Ellen Klages was picked as a Junior Library Guild selection and named a Book Sense Number-One Children's Pick. It follows a young girl named Dewey, whose father is part of a super-secret project in 1943 Los Alamos. Wonderful!

I had to read this book for my Children's Literature class, and I have to say...it was wonderful. Well written and well read, it was a joy to read and I am looking foward to the sequel.

a little boring

This book was a little slow, I don't think it would hold older kids interest for very long. It has some sad things happen though that might bother younger kids. There just wasn't much of a story for me. I wanted to like it but didn't.

Engaging storyline

I've always been fascinated by stories about the atomic bomb. Then this book cakes along and tells it from the point of view of a preteen girl living at Los Alamos. Yes, this is interesting!

Green Glass Sea positive review

This book is one of the most well written books I have ever read. I very much felt an emotional connection during the time of Dewys fathers death the fighting of Suze’s parents. I do not prefer to read books, they are not my cup of tea. However this book showed me what it was like to live during the early and mid 1900’s and the trauma and chaos during that time. The end of the book was marvelous, it was short but somehow long and meaningful. Overall this book was brilliantly written.

Soothing

This book is about a horrific time in history, but the writing, the performance, the story and the characters are soothing to me. I can think of no gentler way to learn what it was like in New Mexico just before WWII ended.

Loved it! A great era intro for ages ten to adult.

This is the perfect introduction to the era. A lot of ways to spin off for further study into the time.
