The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a poignant tale of love, ambition, and the elusive American Dream, set against the opulent backdrop of the Roaring Twenties. Narrated by Nick Carraway, the story unfolds on Long Island's glittering North Shore, where he becomes entangled in the life of his enigmatic neighbor, Jay Gatsby. A self-made millionaire known for his extravagant parties, Gatsby harbors a deep yearning to reunite with Daisy Buchanan, a married woman he once loved and who represents his idealized vision of success and happiness. Through its rich symbolism and lyrical prose, the novel critiques the moral decay beneath the dazzling veneer of wealth, exploring themes of identity, longing, and the often futile pursuit of dreams in a world marked by class divisions and disillusionment.

The novel is as good a one as you can find. I've read it six times and taught it to high schoolers over 30 times, and it is ever fresh and abounding with insights into life. Fitzgerald's prose is brilliant, and his attention to detail is staggering. This particular reading by Jason McCoy is not very good, unless you are looking for laughs. Mispronunciations abound, most notably "fresh green beast of the new world" for "fresh breen breast of the new world" on the last page, and multiple creative pronunciations of the name "Klipspringer." He frequently ignores punctuation, which makes for a choppy read. Still, if you know the novel well enough to recognize the errors, Mr. McCoy's read is serviceable, and will not hinder your enjoyment of the book. The price was certainly right for me: as of the writing of this review, this particular audio version will not cost you a credit.

Poor quality

A minor criticism: The narrator doesn't distinguish voices between speakers so it can take a moment to figure out who is speaking.

Often the books tought in schools can seem overrated, but not this one. It's as close as Huck Finn or Moby Dick to being the Great American Novel, and like them a snapshot of a past that seems both foreign and familiar.

A Past Era Brought Vividly To Life
