Here is a must-listen history of the Lone Star State, together with an insider's look at the people, politics, and events that have shaped Texas from the beginning right up to our days. Never before has the story been told with more vitality and immediacy. Fehrenbach re-creates the Texas saga from prehistory to the Spanish and French invasions to the heyday of the cotton and cattle empires. He dramatically describes the emergence of Texas as a republic, the vote for secession before the Civil War, and the state's readmission to the Union after the War.

Story
Texas is one of the most recognizable states in the United States of America (it is the second-largest, behind Alaska), and it also has a reputation for being unlike any other. This reputation is well-deserved, in part because of the state’s long and often contentious history. From the heyday of the Wild West and the state’s oil boom to the storied Texas Rangers and the construction of one of NASA’s primary facilities, it seems nearly impossible to fully explore everything in the state’s rich past.

Every nation needs its creation myth, and since Texas was a nation before it was a state, it's no surprise that its myths bite deep. There's no piece of history more important to Texans than the Battle of the Alamo, when Davy Crockett and a band of rebels went down in a blaze of glory fighting for independence from Mexico, losing the battle but setting Texas up to win the war.

Story
In March 1836, the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna massacred more than 200 Texians who had been trapped in the Alamo. After 13 days of fighting, American legends Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett died there, along with other Americans who had moved to Texas looking for a fresh start. It was a crushing blow to Texas' fight for freedom. But the story doesn’t end there. The defeat galvanized the Texian settlers, and under General Sam Houston’s leadership, they rallied. Six weeks after the Alamo, Houston and his band of settlers defeated Santa Anna’s army in a shocking victory.

Was a great book until the climate change garbage!
Leave your liberal political ideals out of it and you could make a good book. Liberals always want to say “follow the science”...well follow the science...the couple of lines about cows and oil production and climate change has been debunked by real science. Read the studies done by no less than NASA on climate change.

Interesting and Fun to Hear
I'm a Yellow Rose that Originated in the Fertile soil of the Rio Grande Valley and Blossomed as I was transplanted along the Gulf Coast from Beaumont to San Antonio to Brownsville. The Historical Facts of the book are accurate as I learned both in school and as from personal experience both living in Goliad, San Antonio, Beaumont and various locations within the Greater Houston-Galveston Metropolitan Area. I also took advantage of the many Historical Markers along the Texas Highways and made frequent stops with my children and shared their rich heritage with them as well as showing them The Battleship Texas, San Jacinto Battleground and Monument, and The Alamo. I grew up eating the Wonderful Citrus from the Lower Rio Grande Valley and have missed for years the Ruby Grapefruit that is sweetest form that locale. I want EVERYONE to Know TEXAS RUBY RED GRAPEFRUIT ARE BACK! Once again I have been able to enjoy Big JUICY Grapefruit so Sweet You Can Peel and Eat Them with nothing more than a Towel to Wipe the Juice from Your Chin! Watch for them in late fall FROM MCALLEN, WESLACO, PHARR-SAN JUAN-ALAMO DISTRIBUTORS. If the SUPPLIER'S Address is not from one of those locations or nearby the Fruit will not be as Sweet.

Lots of Good Trivia Knowledge
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
Overall I found this book very interesting. I came out with many more tidbits of knowledge on Texas. Most of the facts were interesting and entertaining. Since this was more of a "here's all the cool stuff on Texas" than it was a "read in this order story", you can easily skip facts that you are not interested in. For example, I skipped the section on famous Texan celebrities, because that's not my cup of tea. But skipping that section did not detract at all from my experience. Additionally, since it took me a few commutes to finish, I found myself going back to some of the sections I enjoyed more. And I plan on revisiting some sections in the future as well.
It's also nice because you can bookmark all the fun facts that stand out to you. I'd list some of my favorite facts, but I don't want to spoil any for potential readers. I set a few bookmarks so I can brush up on the ones I found most interesting; I feel like at least 3 or 4 of these facts will come up in pub trivia for me at some point.
I would say that I would recommend this book to anyone who loves trivia, anyone who lives in Texas, or anyone who is moving to Texas.

Fun Read
Packed with interesting trivia. I live in Texas so it may be more interesting to me than a non resident but there was a lot of trivia that will be interesting to all. For example stories on the invention of white out and Dr Pepper. There was a wide range of trivia, from famous people from Texas to interesting wildlife (camels, zebras and bats to name a few) to places of interest to visit. Recommend if you are looking for a fun read for the whole family.

In Made in America, Bryson de-mythologizes his native land, explaining how a dusty hamlet with neither woods nor holly became Hollywood, how the Wild West wasn't won, why Americans say 'lootenant' and 'Toosday', how Americans were eating junk food long before the word itself was cooked up, as well as exposing the true origins of the G-string, the original $64,000 question, and Dr Kellogg of cornflakes fame.

Oh, Florida! To some people it's a paradise. To others it's a punch line. As Oh, Florida! shows, it's both of these, and, more important, it's a Petri dish, producing trends that end up influencing the rest of the country. Without Florida there would be no NASCAR, no Bettie Page pinups, no Glenn Beck radio rants, no USA Today, no "Stand Your Ground" - you get the idea.

Story
God Save Texas is a journey through the most controversial state in America. It is a red state, but the cities are blue and among the most diverse in the nation. Oil is still king, but Texas now leads California in technology exports. Low taxes and minimal regulation has produced extraordinary growth, but also striking income disparities. Texas looks a lot like the America that Donald Trump wants to create. Texas native Lawrence Wright gives us a colorful, wide-ranging portrait of a state that not only reflects our country as it is, but as it may become.
