Publisher's Summary

After working with thousands of dogs with leash aggression, dog aggression, human aggression, resource guarding, separation anxiety, and overall troublesome behavior, world-renowned trainer Sean O’Shea, owner and founder of The Good Dog Training and Rehabilitation; saw some recurring themes consistently derailing the human/dog relationship. Sean discovered that countless trainers and owners were struggling to not only understand these issues but more importantly, to put clear, concise, easy-to-understand words to them.

The Good Dog Way: Love Them by Leading Them, fills that incredibly important gap. Until its release, dog training books almost exclusively focused on training mechanics, commands, and rules, but had missed the all-important "why".

Why were we struggling?

Why were we making the same mistakes over and over?

Why were our dogs a mess?

Something big was indeed missing, and without this critical piece, the foundational "why" underneath it all, even the best training and coaching practices were still struggling. Pouring several years into compiling, writing, and re-writing, he crafted a training book like no other. A book which clearly articulated how our human emotional tendencies, intellectual misconceptions, as well as a lack of understanding of our dog's true needs, were deeply sabotaging our best intentions. A book which offered simple, but profound answers for these struggles.

Note: This book is based on a balanced approach and philosophy to dog training. Its focus is on practical, realistic, and most of all, effective training. If the idea of sharing consequences with your dog for poor or dangerous choices; or if using modern, effective, and humane tools such as prong or e-collars is not in alignment with your beliefs, then this is likely not the right audiobook for you.

Don't bother

The writing is bad, the narrating is bad, there are no explicit techniques covered, and the methods referred to in this book are NOT recommended for most dogs. I would never expose a fear-reactive dog to the training alluded to in this book. The one positive thing I can say about this is that the author does mention a few things to watch out for that most dog owners don't know about, and it helped confirm to me that my own dog needs trainer intervention. But it won't be this trainer.

Training mom

My dog is well under the way of becoming a happy calm dog using the balanced training method. However, through reading this book, it has opened my eyes to what my handling has done to contribute to my dogs issues and what I need to do to improve that dynamic. Very insightful book for those dog owners that are working to save their misdirected pooches.

incredible

I loved it. There is so much we can glean from this book. I normally have a hard time investing and sticking with a book. Not with this baby.

Fantastic Advice For All Owners

This book is amazing. Even if you don’t agree with tools TGD uses in their training, this book is still for you. This is about being a leader and providing your dog with the direction it needs for you both to have a fun, loving, and safe relationship together at home and out in the real world.

The most useful dog training book I’ve found

If you’re struggling to find balance in your relationship with your dog, this is a must-read. This book helped support me as I moved from being someone struggling with a “problem dog” to being someone known for having a “good dog”. I’m so grateful for how The Good Dog Way deepened and enriched my relationship with my dog; it taught me how to better communicate with him and other dogs, allowing for a totally different level of connection.

Meh

I definitely learned a few very useful tips about how to understand dog behavior in this book. He tells his story in an entertaining and engaging way. I can see how much of this advice is very useful for certain kinds of owners with certain kinds of dogs.

However, this perspective would not have worked well for my own family and pack.
…I just don’t know that I would recommend this book, and so give it 3 stars.

What every dog owner should read. whether you are getting a dog or struggling with your dog, this book is for you. common sense. practical advice to strengthen your relationship with your dog. No fluff, no jargon. no promises of an easy win but an honest book with honest facts from an honest trainer he tells it as it is.

So disappointed

I was so excited about this book I am completely on the same page with the concept of leading and everything that was was said in the start of the book about the relationship with your dog but he kept talking about consequences I was like yes ok give me some examples … nothing … then i realized he was saving that… the book is one giant pitch for e collar and prong training, I’m not against this if it’s right for a dog in the right situation, although it is banned where I live, but my disappointment was that’s all he’s got … the one tool fits all solution he had nothing else to give. So disappointing when the theory of his approach I’m to totally on board with but he lost me at the e collar or prong being the only consequence to everything ! I wish I hadn’t bought it left me feeling so frustrated .
