Brought to you by Penguin.

The spellbinding Sunday Times best seller from the author of Me Before You.

The greatest love story is the one you least expect....

Alice is stifled, bored, and misunderstood. So when she meets wealthy and handsome American, Bennett Van Cleve, she is quickly swept off her feet.

Marrying him and moving to America seems like a great adventure - but life as a newlywed in stuffy Baileyville, Kentucky, is not at all what she hoped for.

Until, that is, she responds to a call for volunteers to start a travelling library, surprising herself by saying yes, before her husband can say no....

Led by feisty and rebellious, Margery O'Hare, this unlikely group of women travel far and wide on their mission to bring books and reading to those that need it, and Alice finally finds the freedom, friendship and love that she's been looking for.

But not everyone approves of what they are doing, especially her new father-in-law. And when the town turns against them, will their belief in each other and their work be enough?

The Giver of Stars is a mesmerising tale of female friendship, romance, and the wonder of books and reading, inspired by a remarkable true story.

Amazing Book and Fantasic Narration

“There is always a way out of a situation. Might be ugly. Might leave you feeling like the earth had gone and shifted under your feet. But there is always a way around.”
~Jojo Moyes, The Giver of Stars

EVERYBODY STOP WHATEVER YOU’RE DOING AND BUY THIS BOOK!! I promise you won’t regret it. The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes is the unforgettable story of a group of women that become the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky. The women are all vastly different, but the way they come together to protect each other and serve their community is incredible.

As you can probably tell, I LOVED this story. Absolutely loved it. I was immediately drawn into the beautiful descriptions of the Kentucky mountains, and by each unique character fighting to break free of the traditional expectations set upon women and create a life for themselves. I loved the lengths with which they would go to deliver books to their community, and the incredible life-changing impact that we all know that books have. The story primarily revolves around Alice, a British women brought to Kentucky by her new husband who quickly discovers the marriage to not be all she thought it would be; and Margery, a bit of an outcast from town, but the feisty leader of the Packhorse Librarians, and a women not afraid to live by her own rules. Together Margery and Alice discover what it means to truly fight for the life you want to live, and how far the bonds of friendship can sustain us.

I loved all the beautiful romances throughout the story, and the ways that each relationship developed. The second half of the book completely took me by surprise with the new plot lines that were introduced, and by the end I found myself crying with a smile on my face. That ending was SO moving. I wish this review could truly do justice to this incredible story, but I honestly can’t. The Giver of Stars quickly became one of my favorite reads of the year, and one of my favorite stories of all time. I HIGHLY recommend that everyone read or listen to it. (The audio-book is PHENOMENAL by the way...I mean, it’s Julia Whelan...need I say more?!)

JoJo Moyes and Julia Whelan at their best!

I must start with the narration.
Sometimes it was difficult to comprehend that only one narrator was narrating this book.
The different character voices absolutely brilliantly done!
I loved everything about this book. The story line, the characters, the setting everything.

Riveting!

What a fabulous story!!! Loved it from start to finish. An interesting bunch of characters with many twists and turns in the plot. Includes the operation & establishment of Elinor Roosevelt’s rural pack horse library in Kentucky. What amazing women! Proving my life’s motto - where there’s a woman - there’s a way!!!!

Another fantastic read by Jojo Moyes

Loved this book! Quite different from her other books but full of great characters and at the heart of it strong female characters
Narration was great but found the english voice occasionally slightly jarring
Highly recommend, it’s going to take me a while to find a book I enjoy listening to as much

Narrator doesn't do it justice

This is a gripping story which is quite different to the books I usually read.
I enjoyed the story but the narrator didn't do it justice, in my opinion.
There are a number of songs in the story and the narrator chose to read the lyrics rather than sing them. It meant the impact of the songs is lost from the scene.
Also couldn't always differentiate the male voices so had to rewind and check who was speaking.

Enjoyable second half

The first third of the book I found a bit slow going. However, by the end I felt connected with the characters and cared about what happened to them. English accent is a bit dodgy!

After being unsure of this book for the first chapter, I quickly became hooked! The storyline is very different to what I expected but I loved every second of it and I’ll be waiting impatiently for the next book by Jojo Moyes.

Everything You Need

I am rather partial to historical fiction & I loved this book from start to finish, actually I didn't want it to finish at all. The interaction between the ladies was what we all hope for in relationships with women. I was interested to learn of the Packhorse Library Julia Whelan is sooo easy to listen to. 5 Star listening. So descriptive & easy to form imagination of the time, people & events.

A real surprise.

I had bought this audio book without reading the write up as I loved Me before you and the rest. So when it begins, set in the early 20th century ( read in with an American accent no less ) I was perturbed.
“Oh well, I’ve bought it now- May as well hear it out” I thought......
20 minutes later and I was hooked. The warmth of the women, the unlikely friendships that develop and the vivid painting of mountains- it carried me away to a time and place I didn’t want to leave.
I genuinely loved this book and the fact it’s based around a true story made me love it even more.

I adored this

I loved this book so much and I've recommended it all over the place!
I adored the characters, the history, the humour and the sadness.
I couldn't wait to check in with the ladies each day but as I got closer and closer towards the end I didn't want to say goodbye.
I wanted more!
Such a warm story and I loved each of the main characters like close friends.
