Acerca de esta escucha

An orphaned young math prodigy in need of family. A painting that shatters a woman’s peace. And a decades-old mystery demanding to be solved.

Australia, 1906: Orphan Jane Piper is nine years old when philanthropist siblings Michael and Elizabeth Quinn take her into their home to further her schooling. The Quinns are no strangers to hardship. Having arrived in Australia as penniless immigrants, they now care for others as lost as they once were.

Despite Jane’s mysterious past, her remarkable aptitude for mathematics takes her far over the next seven years, and her relationship with Elizabeth and Michael flourishes as she plays an increasingly prominent part in their business.

But when Elizabeth reacts in terror to an exhibition at the local gallery, Jane realizes no one knows Elizabeth after all—not even Elizabeth herself. As the past and present converge and Elizabeth’s grasp on reality loosens, Jane sets out to unravel her story before it’s too late.

From the gritty reality of the Australian goldfields to the grand institutions of Sydney, this compelling novel presents a mystery that spans continents and decades as both women finally discover a place to call home.

Praise for The Girl in the Painting

“Combining characters that are wonderfully complex with a story spanning decades of their lives, The Girl in the Painting is a triumph of family, faith, and long-awaited forgiveness. I was swept away!” —Kristy Cambron, bestselling author of The Paris Dressmaker

Couldn't put it down.

The story was captivating. The very long pauses and deep breaths by the narrator were a bit distracting. I will be looking for more of this author's books.

Such a good mystery

The plot was sufficiently good to keep me guessing until right before it was revealed.
I enjoyed it tremendously.
The reading was very nice. The dialects were “close enough”.
I just enjoy a good story that is engaging. Not overly gross. And uses good grammar.

Good portrayal of an autistic woman who makes a place for herself

Yes, the book isn't about an autistic woman. The story is fun and it's a good listen with an interesting historical background. The character of Jane stood out to me from the beginning. I'm an autistic woman who lived most of my life not knowing it, and relate so much to her! Autism was barely beginning to be understood when I was a kid in the 1950s, so Jane's people just thought she was thoughtless and quirky but a whiz at math and logic. I love the fact that she was still treated well by her 'family', and that she was seen as competent and able to run the business. Autism is so poorly understood so it's refreshing to see this character thrive without Autism being highlighted. Though I do wish that the author, if she realized she was writing an autistic character, would have noted that in the afterward.

I really liked the story, though sometimes I wanted to shout at the characters to figure out what was obvious. All in all, I enjoyed it.

Engaging & inspirational

The heroines in this story were inspiring and believable. It was entertaining to have many different women characters and learn some history about parts of Ireland, England, and Australia. Tying in the history of abandoned children was also enlightening.

Another delightful book!

This week I've had the pleasure of listening another outstanding book. The Girl in the Painting was excellent and I highly recommend this book. The writing was excellent and the narration was outstanding. Characters were well developed as was the story. Won't give any spoiler alerts other than to say there is lost love, intrigue, mystery and historical events all wrapped up into one delightful book.

the vivid characters, historical setting and how the story pulled me in

the characters were so real. I felt like I was experiencing the period through their eyes. I loved how the story came together, almost like a mystery to solve. I appreciated the imperfect yet strong women finding their way at a time when wo.en were so vulnerable and undervalued as human beings. The overcoming of obstacles and the twists and turns that like takes were beautifully portrayed. The historical setting and true-to-life events made this story come alive.
