Story
Detective Angie Pallorino took down a serial killer permanently and, according to her superiors, with excessive force. Benched on a desk assignment for twelve months, Angie struggles to maintain her sense of identity - if she's not a detective, who is she? Then a decades-old cold case washes ashore, pulling her into an investigation she recognizes as deeply personal. Angie's lover and partner, James Maddocks, sees it, too. But spearheading an ongoing probe into a sex-trafficking ring while keeping Angie's increasing obsession with her case in check is taking its toll.

Publisher's Summary
A shallow grave exposes deadly secrets as bestselling author Loreth Anne White brings her thrilling series of romantic suspense to its shocking conclusion...
Disgraced ex-cop Angie Pallorino is determined to make a new start for herself as a private investigator. But first, she and her lover, newly promoted homicide detective James Maddocks, attempt a quiet getaway to rekindle a romance struggling in the shadows of their careers. The peace doesn’t last long when human skeletal remains are found in a nearby mossy grove.
This decades-old mystery is just what Angie needs to establish her new career - even as it thrusts her and Maddocks back into the media spotlight, once again endangering their tenuous relationship.
Then, when Angie’s inquiry into the old crime intersects with a cold case from her own policing past - one that a detective on Maddocks’s new team is working on - the investigation takes a startling twist. It puts more than Angie’s last shot at redemption and a future with Maddocks at risk. The mystery of the girl in the moss could kill her.

Her issues have issues!!
Well, this was certainly a real edge of your seat kind of book. I've never been a huge fan of Loreth Ann White but her Angie Pallorino series should not be missed. There are three books so far in this series and I don't really think they have to be listened to in order but I do think it helps since they are referenced.
This book brings back some bad memories for Angie who is struggling to earn a living and move on with her life. She approached by a retired judge and offered a job as a PI to find out what happened to her dead granddaughter. She wants to know if it really was an accident. But Angie doesn't yet have her own PI license. She first had to finagle a job out of someone she knows who doesn't want to hire her.
This book takes you places you'd never thought you would go! From where it started to the ending this story does so many 180* turns it will keep you going in circles. The conclusion completely blew me away.
Julie McKay does an excellent job narrating however a little slow and I had to listen at an accelerated speed.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Please fire the narrator!!
This is the third time I've said this. I really enjoy the series, but the narrator is ridiculously over the top. She sounds like a newscaster that insists that all Canadian males are actually Italians from Brooklyn. She mispronounced a lot of words as well. Please find someone else.

Better than Book 2, but not as good as Book 1
I think it is best to not read the books back to back like I did. The constant reminding or rehashing of situations from the previous novels gets old very quickly.

Good Murder Mystery
This is a good murder mystery. It has an unpredictable plot with a climatic ending. The narrator seems to struggle with male voices but otherwise does a good job. I gave it three stars, because to me, the author tried to squeeze in too many side plots and commentaries about life and society and this made the book drag horribly. It was truly a struggle to get to the end and I couldn't listen to it for long periods of time. By the end, I just wanted it to end. It does wind up the trilogy nicely and tries to be profound about relationships, life, motivation, carrying on despite trials and grief. I just found it dry and tedious, but again that's my impression. I very much liked several characters and the murder plot itself was well done. It's a solid three stars to me, good but not exceptional.

I Hope There Is More!
Even when Angie Pallorino, the protagonist in Loreth Anne White's third novel in her mystery crime series, wants to take a break, she can't. Pallorino and boyfriend Maddox go flyfishing but stumble across a long-buried body. And "The Girl in the Moss" is no regular mystery. Death and strangeness await in the greater British Columbia wilderness. Pallorino, who's trying to make her credentials as a private investigator after getting fired from the Victoria police force, starts asking questions in the small town. She and Maddox had visited a remote lodge for their getaway. But the whole town appears not to want to know what happened to the victim. Even the cops appear compromised. That doesn't bother Pallorino. She's not bothered by warnings, even when somebody trashes her car. She picks up the scent of something rotten and goes charging in. White doesn't disappoint. She creates a bizarre situation nobody would want to encounter in the emerald forest.
Julie McKay was outstanding with the delivery of the story

Five Star Review
Loreth Anne White has truly become my favorite author, for over a year now. The way she writes the story, the characters detail, and how the story unfolds up to the last moment is everything I seek for to escape the real world. To be transported into a fictional world. I have read six of her books now and not one has let me down! I can’t wait to start another one.
