My name is Quinn MacKenna, and magic doesn’t work on me. When I’m not getting roped into bar brawls in Boston, I’m usually acquiring - stealing is a form of acquisition, you know - dangerous magical artifacts to turn around and sell them to the highest bidders. But I prefer to be paid in favors, not money. Because favors are a hot commodity in the Land of the Fae. Favors are the only currency that will buy the answers I seek: Why magic doesn’t work on me, and who my real father is.

Story
From the pulpy pages of Black Mask Magazine in the 1920s and '30s, through the film noir era of the 1940s, to today, noir fiction has lured many a reader and movie-goer away from the light and into the dark underbelly of society. Names such as Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and James M. Cain; titles like The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon, The Postman Always Rings Twice...these have inhabited our collective consciousness for decades. Humanity, it seems, loves the dark. And within the dark, one figure stands out: that of the femme fatale.

Publisher's Summary
The suprahuman secret is out. An assassin is targeting the gifted ones in Little Tokyo for extermination. At the same time, a dangerous yakuza clan has singled out private eye Charlie Madison, determined to squeeze him for information about superpowered individuals - that no one should know exist.
With a fresh bounty on his head courtesy of the Russian bratva, it's in Madison's best interest to stay under the radar. But that doesn't keep him from trying to help a gifted young woman who shows up on his doorstep late one night claiming she's being hunted.
And it doesn't stop federal agents from rounding up Madison and probing his repressed memories from the war. Years ago, while stationed on the Eastern Front, he supposedly crossed paths with the enigmatic Dr. X, who created the world's first suprahumans. Problem is, Madison has no memory of ever meeting her.
Charlie Madison's history has returned to haunt him. While underworld powers vie for territorial domination and the gifted ones struggle to survive, he'll have to do what he does best: Put the pieces together and solve the mystery. But this time, he's fighting against ghosts from his past, and the stakes have never been higher.

Great Listen
Milo has put out another exciting & captivating story, which he continues to do. Our protagonist Charlie Madison is an awesome character who is constantly being hounded by his enemies, while he continues to fight the good fight. Robert Rossman did a fine job narrating. I received this free audiobook code from Milo's promotion, and I am giving my voluntary unbiased review.

A Captivating Thriller
This was fantastic. This author takes you on a wonderful ride from the start to the very end.
I enjoyed every minute of the audible. The detective Charles Madison takes you into his current world with all the action from Russians chasing him to different clans trying to take him out. He learns he may have had some of his memories tampered with when he was a soldier. The narrator was amazing and smoothly switched from each character. I will be looking for more from this author and narrator.

Some very close calls and near impossible escapes and rescues kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next adventure. I loved the detective, but Frank was a standout for me ♥️. I enjoyed following along and peeling back layer after layer of the sci fi mystery. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a great job bringing it to life.
