Publisher's Summary

Penelope Thornton-McClure and her bookshop's ghost-in-residence, Jack Shepard, are back on a new case in this delightful paranormal mystery from New York Times best-selling author Cleo Coyle.

A big best-seller leads to small-town trouble.

Bookshop owner Penelope Thornton-McClure didn't believe in ghosts, until she was haunted by the hard-boiled spirit of 1940s Private Investigator Jack Shepard. Now Jack is back on the job, and Pen is eternally grateful.

After an elegant new customer has a breakdown in her shop, Penelope suspects there is something bogus behind the biggest best-seller of the year. This popular potboiler is so hot that folks in her tiny Rhode Island town are dying to read it - literally. First, one customer turns up dead, followed by another mysterious fatality connected to the book, which Pen discovers is more than just fiction.

Now, with the help of her gumshoe ghost, Pen must solve the real-life cold case behind the bogus best-seller before the killer closes the book on her.

I love this series!

This is a fun series with no cussing and no sex scenes. I love the fact I listen to this in my car with my kids.

5 stars

This might be the best book in this series so far. Pen and Jack try to solve a mystery that is full of complexities and red herrings. I love that his cases mirror her cases and how they work together to get results. This is a great series and I look forward to the next one.

They just keep getting better.

I really enjoyed these books so much that I will buy future books from this author. They’re just not like a two dimensional book they’re actually three-dimensional with so much research and blending of different worlds. Most important I know my husband will also love them. I’m going to buy the first coffeehouse book. So grateful we can sample some of her works.

Great

I can’t tell you how much I enjoy the relationship between the ghost and Pen. In my mind I am hoping in the last book she writes it’s the ending in my mind.
These books are mysteries but give you a sense of wonderful relationships. This is a enjoyable book as I said before but not the best but holds you to it. I have read the series and looking forward to the next

Fun listen with twists and turns

This series has good lighthearted mysteries, a smidge of romance and a thoroughly enjoyable listen. I’ve found a few that fit and such a nice break for my typical books. Especially during trying times, this is better than a visit to the doctor.

Fun, but oddly anti-academic

An enjoyable series for lovers of cozy mysteries overall. Jack's casual misogyny can get old, as can Pen's insistence on excusing it or ignoring it, "accurate" as it might be for his generation. There also seems to be a strange anti-academia chip on the authors' shoulders: this is the second book in the series to contain at least one lengthy anti-academic rant, mainly complaining about "English professors" and their snobbery. Perhaps for someone who experienced academia in the 1970s and 1980s that complaint might have some basis in experience. But this is a very outdated impression of academic practices and attitudes: cozies and all other popular genres are regularly studied and assigned and enjoyed in English and literature departments around the world these days! These anti-academia rants also don't seem to advance the plot in any way, so they stick out and disrupt the narrative -- at least to this reader. Not to mention, vilifying a whole category of book lovers (e.g., literature teachers) seems... close-minded at best. But if such rants won't bother you then you are likely to enjoy this series, as I (mostly) do.

Great character voices and story

I listened to the novel in one sitting. Jack, the Ghost, was not voiced in the same way as previous novels by Shaffer, but was still enjoyable. At times, he almost sounded like a male Aunt Sadie. The other regular characters were so near the same that I instantly recognized them.
The town gossip continued with more of the same issues of Town Council being a problem, but Bud, the hardware store guy had not gotten in office, nor was there any mention of it.
Despite these small plot and narration items, the 10 year gap between the last two novels can hardly be felt, and the two narrators do a fantastic job with the story.
I do hope there will be another mystery for Pen and Jack published in less time than 10 years.
