Publisher's summary

The president of Southern Seminary reveals how secularism has infiltrated every aspect of society and how Christians, equipped with the gospel of Jesus Christ, can meet it head on with hope, confidence, and steadfast conviction.

A Storm Is Coming

Western civilization and the Christian church stand at a moment of great danger. Facing them both is a hurricane-force battle of ideas that will determine the future of Western civilization and the soul of the Christian church. The forces arrayed against the West and the church are destructive ideologies, policies, and worldviews deeply established among intellectual elites, the political class, and our schools. More menacingly, these forces have also invaded the Christian church.

The perils faced by the West and the church are unprecedented:

  • threats to religious liberty
  • redefinitions of marriage and family
  • attacks on the sacredness and dignity of human life

How should Christians respond to this multifaceted challenge?

Addressing each dimension of this challenge, The Gathering Storm provides answers and equips Christians both to give an answer for the hope that is within them and to contend for the faith that was once and for all delivered to the saints.

Unhelpful

As an evangelical, I was hoping to find some helpful practices from Dr. Mohler, but instead I found this book to be woefully inept. The whole book seems to be a list of grievances and a call to fight for Christian political policy over all else. It felt like an oversimplification that lacked empathy for those on the other side, created in the reader a dangerous feeling of persecution and fear, and put politics above the gospel.

Stirring reflection.

I decided to give this a listen to examine my thoughts on the matters discussed. I found thoughts stirring between what is written in the Bible. While I won’t divulge my position, will say at the end of the book I am left asking the following questions. How do I love others like Jesus? What does it look like for the kingdom of God to come in these areas? How can I be part of His kingdom coming? Are we in the west so sheltered from persecution that we have not acted as the church should? Have we caused this by our own indifference and absence of discipline making? To me the change and progression is obvious and should not be a shock. What American Christians need to realize is that politics are down stream of culture. We must effect the culture by bringing the kingdom and making disciples. The book shows the issues it believes are important but appears to seek to change the outcome through politics not through the power of the gospel.

Who Can Calm The Storm

A clear description of our liberal times and dangers. The book helps one to see the way through the secular confusion of today to the One who can calm the storm.

Interesting Book

Wish that I had this book in 2017 to explain what the heck was going on with the LGBTIQ wanting all their gay and queer rights. This book explains where the movement came from and how they take control of a nation.

Book is worth the conclusion alone

I found large sections of the book quite technical and focused on U.S. politics. I have never lived in the USA, therefore the political references are somewhat meaningless.

It is sometimes repetative and hard going at times. That is partly because it honestly discusses the reality and implications of our sinful rejection of God and how that overlaps in various spheres of life.

There were great quotes littered throughout the book. I think it is "literary time capsule". It forces you to think hard about important topics of our day.

The conclusion in my opinion was worth the cost of the whole book. Having sketched a dire picture of the challenges we are facing, the conclusion shows how Christians should respond with love, faith and hope.
