Publisher's Summary

“A relevant, compelling, and compassionate look at the torture of conflicted loyalties and the slipperiness of truth.” -Jenna Blum, New York Times bestselling author of Those Who Save Us and The Lost Family

In this evocative debut novel, Katrin Schumann weaves a riveting story of past and present - and how love can lead us astray.

At twenty-four, Katie Gregory feels like life is looking up: she’s snagged a great job in New York City and is falling for a captivating artist - and memories of her traumatic past are finally fading. Katie’s life fell apart almost a decade earlier, during an idyllic summer at her family’s cabin on Eagle Lake when her best friend accused her father of sexual assault. Throughout his trial and imprisonment, Katie insisted on his innocence, dodging reporters and clinging to memories of the man she adores.

Now he’s getting out. Yet when Katie returns to the shuttered lakeside cabin, details of that fateful night resurface: the chill of the lake, the heat of first love, the terrible sting of jealousy. And as old memories collide with new realities, they call into question everything she thinks she knows about family, friends, and, ultimately, herself. Now, Katie’s choices will be put to the test with life-altering consequences.

I would love to finish the book...

But the narrator’s voice is so breathlessly annoying, I just can’t. She needs to ease up on the whine and breathiness a lot. I only got 1 chapter in and (a) I hate the main character based on the narrator’s voice alone, and (b) I can’t really say if the character is really a breathy twit who whines and whines because I have to return the book.

Interesting

Detailed description of one’s train of thought and psyche makes this book stand out from the rest.

Strange voice - ok story

The narrator wasn’t great. You could hear her swallowing and sniffing and just really weird uncomfortable noises.

It was ok

Fairly interesting but I found the writing to be maybe a little contrived or predictable. written for dramatic effect. It was ok.

Sad, pointless.

My fault for always hanging in with a book that drags, an author who always talks like she is breathlessly telling you a very. serious. secret.
I kept waiting for this book to go somewhere, make a point, surprise me. All it did was make me more sad about the world. But hey, another book with a zesty Epilogue! :/ I don't recommend this one.

Boring

I am so underwhelmed by First Reads books. This is another second rate book as most of them are. The author goes on and on without advancing the story. She seems to want to impress with what she wants to be beautiful writing , which it ain't. Even though these books are inexpensive, I rarely find one I want to finnish.
