The highly anticipated follow-up to William R. Forstchen's New York Times best-sellers, One Second After and One Year After, The Final Day immerses listeners once more in the story of our nation's struggle to rebuild itself after an electromagnetic pulse wipes out all electricity and plunges the country into darkness, starvation, and terror.

After defeating the designs of the alleged federal government, John Matherson and his community have returned their attention to restoring the technologies and social order that existed prior to the EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) attack. Then the government announces that it is ceding large portions of the country to China and Mexico. The Constitution is no longer in effect, and what's left of the US Army has been deployed to suppress rebellion in the remaining states.

The man sent to confront John is General Bob Scales, John's old commanding officer and closest friend from prewar days. Will General Scales follow orders, or might he be the crucial turning point in the quest for an America that is again united? As the dubious Federal government increasingly curtails liberty and trades away sovereignty, it might just get exactly what it fears: revolution.

I've read many a dystopian novel & trilogy in my 80 years, but never one so well written as this by a master storyteller, read by a narrator who so richly conveyed the various characters, and a cast of characters to care about. This story brought me to tears several times, but is far from maudlin. Again, the very best dystopian story ever. Read all three books. They're well worth the time.

best dystopian trilogy ever

this book could have gone on and on and been much longer than it is. so many different ways this story could end or continue. the author did a very good job. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I thought the narrator was very good contrary to many other reviews. I would definitely listen to him again on another book. I read the first book which was really incredible, quite eye opening. this is a warning for people here on planet Earth. Life as we know it can change so radically if somebody drops a nuke or an emp type weapon, as in this case.

Excellent

Ties up the things that caused this and a possible way out. I enjoyed the stories and am now waiting on four.

ties up some corruption

The narrator is the same as the 2nd book. He gave the main character John a more southern accent in that book but took it away in the 3rd. I found it frustrating when John and Bob spoke as they didn’t ever get to the bottom of anything. Vague soap opera style discussions of nothing. In the end I was disappointed with this 3rd book. Does John get to see his child born or not?????

It got confusing

Gripping. Fantastic ending to the trilogy. Well read. I highly recommend listening/reading the entire series.

The Final Day - Awesome

Highly recommended. Agree with “too many memories of the past” but still a fitting conclusion. Narrator in book two threw me off with all of the accents which were over done. He redeemed himself in book three. For those that complained he was “monotone”, I disagree. When I listen, I don’t want to “hear” the reader’s voice. I want the author’s voice to come through. It did here.

Great Conclusion Read Well

The issue with listening to these book back to back to back is that the narrator changes from book 1 to 2 and then changes his character voices and accents from book 2 and 3, despite the same narrator. I do think this was a better performance than book 2.

The story itself was interesting and enjoyable. It went in a likely direction, but still kept to the thoughts and message of the book series. I’ll probably listen to the next one out of curiosity, but this was a nice ending.

Good story. Narrator…….meh

Bronson Pinchot has again found the right voices to bring characters to life. One of my favorite narrators and now a book series that I recommend to all those around me. Wish we could have had his voice for the first installment.
