When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder - much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing - not even a smear of blood - to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

In this revealing compendium, acclaimed writer Diana Gabaldon shares her invaluable lessons for creating an immersive reading experience, from evoking a mood to using the power of emotions to communicate physical intimacy. You'll learn the difference between gratuitous sex and genuine encounters that move the story forward and how to handle less-than-savory acts that nevertheless serve a narrative purpose. Gabaldon also notes that sex can be conveyed instead of described.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Sam Heughan, if he read the phone book I would be all over it. I had many smiles happening as the authors clever story rang through with Sam's voice. I had to keep reminding myself I wasn't sitting around the hearth st Lallybroch listening to Jamie tell a story. Yum.

Sam Heughan Narrates
I knew I would buy this just because Sam was the narrator. I wasn't at all familiar with the author or her series and normally wouldn't have listened to this mini book.
However, despite sounding a tiny bit like Peter Lorre when reading the American voices, Sam's performance was great. In spite of myself I became interested in the actual story. Not sure that I would read any further but I can confidently say that if Sam is narrating, I would buy with pleasure.

I was competely drawn into the adventure of the boat ride and posiible drowning of clairie and Simone, only to be as surprised as Simone and Clairie that they were drugged. A good way to explain and show the meaning of the unions made at ShadowHunter Academy. Sam Heughan once again has astounded me. Interesting, well-written novella
This story is a companion book to the "Mortal Instruments" young adult fantasy series, which I have not read. Although I missed a lot of the background on the characters I was able to follow the story and get a sense that the author is a very good writer.
Sam Hueghan does an excellent job as the narrator. I missed his Highland and Lowland Scots accent, but loved the additional accents I did not know he possessed.
This is not a genre that I usually follow, but I am intrigued enough to explore more of the books.
