A Mystery Solved

In 1888, five gruesome murders shocked the civilized public. A bloodthirsty killer was on the loose in the slums of London. The world was on the lookout for Jack the Ripper.

Scotland Yard never found their man - or so they said publicly. The police knew the killer's identity but concealed it to save the ruling class from embarrassment.

The Escape of Jack the Ripper reveals how British elites manipulated the public to protect one of their own. Through meticulous research, Jonathan Hainsworth and Christine Ward-Agius have uncovered the killer's identity.

In The Escape of Jack the Ripper, you'll learn: how a fit of madness transformed a reputable gentleman into a savage murderer; that the killer was caught literally red-handed but talked his way out of police custody; about the decades-long cover-up by the press and the police to protect a well-to-do family's reputation; about the harrowing social conditions in which the murders took place; and how the social privileges enjoyed by the ruling class led to a miscarriage of justice. A thoroughly researched and gripping tale, The Escape of Jack the Ripper solves the great Whitechapel murder mystery once and for all.

I had high hopes for this book. I’ve read several books about the Ripper and hoped this would be a good addition. The first3 or 4 chapters were completely devoted to give a detailed description of who was who and how they were related and very little else. I stopped listening and will pick it up at another time, I think. Wish there had been something to catch my ears to make me want to continue.

I needed a score card to keep up

isn't the simplest solution the most likely. I like druitt as a p.o.i. for the most famous unknown serial killer for all of time. jack has to be a physically fit person, in my mind. druitt has that and a mental break! I like the way this book doesn't go into the more creative ideas usually presented in ripper theories. it lays out why druitt would have been a suspect and how he is likely to be the man described repeatedly by many contemporary police and detectives. I can't say it was ever a man who came to the attention of the investigation, but to be fair to Scotland yard, this is a very special, hallmark case.

a simple solution.

I enjoyed the narrator's voice, it made listening to some fairly gruesome details a bit more bareable.

Informative

Good but not impressed. to many contradictions from other pieces on this period of history.

It was okay.

I was bored and not convinced. Plus, the title “The Escape of Jack The Ripper” is misleading.

Not convincing

Entire book is conjecture based on a man who committed suicide shortly after Jack the Ripper seemingly ended his reign of terror.

Work of fiction

MJD was never JTR and he never shall be. Stop trying to make 'fetch' happen. Why would you even address this again without adding anything new to the research pool? Ugh, as if. (mixing my movies, not sorry)

Poor dead horse.
