Publisher's Summary

Sarah Gailey's The Echo Wife is “a trippy domestic thriller which takes the extramarital affair trope in some intriguingly weird new directions.” (Entertainment Weekly)

I’m embarrassed, still, by how long it took me to notice. Everything was right there in the open, right there in front of me, but it still took me so long to see the person I had married.

It took me so long to hate him.

Martine is a genetically cloned replica made from Evelyn Caldwell’s award-winning research. She’s patient and gentle and obedient. She’s everything Evelyn swore she’d never be.

And she’s having an affair with Evelyn’s husband.

Now, the cheating bastard is dead, and both Caldwell wives have a mess to clean up.

Good thing Evelyn Caldwell is used to getting her hands dirty.

So many levels

Sarah Gailey just keeps getting better. Gailey adds layers and layers and a good dose of suspense to the standard literary tropes of cloning. I went in blind and was glad I did. Xe Sands was great, as always.

Unexpected plot twists led to a quality story

I picked this mostly on a whim and am glad I did so! What seemed predictable at the beginning turned into a story with some unpredictable plot twists that challenge the listener's stance on morality when it comes to "created" beings and if/how they differ from "birthed" beings. Really good story with expert-level vocabulary that certainly kept me interested.

The narrator brought this to life

This book was very interesting and satisfying on a lot of levels but the narrator definitely elevated it to the point where you felt like you really knew the lead character and empathize d with her. I’m gonna look at other books that she has narrated

Complex Characters with Complex Problems

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, which was one I purchased on a whim after hearing the premise. I’ll admit, it’s not exactly what I expected. Gailey’s story focuses largely on what happens after the protagonist’s husband leaves her for a clone he’d secretly made of her, not on the infidelity itself. It’s a dark story driven by a lead character who isn’t always likable, and that suggests the clones, who are not considered human, are far more humane than their biological counterparts. But don’t think this is all sci-fi philosophizing. There’s plenty of secrets, lies and murder to keep things entertaining. I particularly enjoyed the narrator’s sandy-voiced delivery, which manages to break just the right amount when the protagonist is admitting things to herself that she’s not proud of or is upset about. I’ll be looking for more books read by Xe Sands after experiencing this one, for certain!

It could have done so much more

I loved the idea of this story, but it just didn't go to the places I wanted it to. And I felt there were many plot holes or loose ends that could have brought the whole thing down, bit were never mentioned.

Uneventful

The story was slow moving. The narrator's voice was monotone and the main character was extremely unlikeable. The end fit the storyline. Had potential but wouldn't recommend.

Distracting Narration -- Story Had Potential

Attempted to listen several times as the story drew me in from the start. Unfortunately, the narration was distracting and lacked natural conversation flow. It sounded like narrator was reading in a much lower register than her usual voice, which came across as gritty, forced and, perhaps, a suggestion of "use your sexy voice when reading this."

Will happily purchase book as Kindle.
