He surfaced two years ago. Then he disappeared.

But Detective Angie Pallorino hasn't forgotten the violent rapist who left a distinctive calling card—crosses etched into the flesh of his victim's foreheads. When a comatose Jane Doe is found in a local cemetery, sexually assaulted, mutilated, and nearly drowned, Angie is struck by the eerie similarities to her earlier unsolved rapes. Could he be back?

Then the body of a drowned young woman, also bearing the marks of the serial rapist, floats up in the Gorge, and the hunt for a predator becomes a hunt for a killer. Assigned to the joint investigative task force, Angie is more than ready to prove that she has what it takes to break into the all-male homicide division. But her private life collides with her professional ambitions when she's introduced to her temporary partner, James Maddocks—a man she'd met just the night before in an intense, anonymous encounter.

Together, Angie and Maddocks agree to put that night behind them. But as their search for the killer intensifies, so does their mutual desire. And Angie's forays into the mind of a monster shake loose some unsettling secrets about her own past. How can she fight for the truth when it turns out her whole life is a lie?

When I grow up I want to be Angie Pallorino...ok maybe not 100%, I mean I want to be tough, solve great mysteries, and jump Maddocks on the regular, but more than anything I want to have coffee with Kjel. What does this really mean? It means Loreth Anne White creates an incredible gritty tale with relatable, albeit not necessarily desired, situations and characters that and authentic and rich. Loved the creative language, the occasional need for a dictionary look-up because nothing about the language is dumbed down which absolutely suits the story, and maps and the internet to learn about regions that are not “typical” to books I’ve read before. Angie Pallorino’s first story sucked me in and I now devour everything this brilliant author presents! Brava Loreth Anne White and thank you for the new adventures!

Fantastic performance as well!

First, the teasers for the other books in this series are spoiler alerts to the outcome of this book and its’ characters. That took away some of the edge for me, so hopefully you can avoid it.
The narrators voice took some getting used to because it seems a bit newscaster-ish, but her range to portray both men and women with different dialects and accents is wonderful.
There is so much detail in this book and it’s clear that the author did her research and took the time and work to get as in-depth into the specific medical, religious, and law enforcement world and terminology. Made the book easy to be immersed into as you can almost smell the smells and feel as though you are in the surroundings.
Will certainly be reading the rest of this series and anything else I can find by this author.

A lot of detail, great book, depth in characters

Well written and plot is good. I just had a hard time getting past the inflections and pronunciations of the narrator. The character voices were done well but Iwill read any of the books that are written in this series in lieu of listening to this narrator.

incredibly annoying narrator

I really enjoyed reading this book and I think others will too! Angie Pallorino has a way of finding trouble around her, but she has a lot of guts and this book was a little unnerving with the way the killer was leaving the bodies and then I Loved how she had back up when she didn't think she did. There were a few times when I thought I had things figured out, but I didn't! I will definitely refer this book to others.

EXCELLENT READ!
