Publisher's Summary

It is 1953, and Melbourne society is looking forward to coronation season, the grand balls and celebrations for the young queen-to-be. Tilly Dunnage is, however, working for a pittance in a second-rate Collins Street salon. Her talents go unappreciated, and the madame is a bully and a cheat, but Tilly has a past she is desperate to escape and good reason to prefer anonymity.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Farrat and the McSwiney clan have been searching for their resident dressmaker ever since she left Dungatar in flames. And they aren't the only ones. The inhabitants of the town are still out for revenge (or at least someone to foot the bill for the new high street). So when Tilly's name starts to feature in the fashion pages, the jig is up. Along with Tilly's hopes of keeping her secrets hidden....

Not for me. A struggle from start to finish.

Really struggled with this story. Too many characters - most of which were referred to by other names from time to time making it even more confusing. Not many of them were likable & some just unbelievable. The story jumped around and became repetitive. The whole thing was made so much worse but such a terrible narrator. Voices given to characters were spoilt, nasty children. Some of the storylines around the dress designs were enjoyable & the reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one. I found I just couldn't care about any of the characters or where the story was going. Listened to the end because it was a book club book.

Better than the first

Absolutely loved this follow up book. Caroline Lee is a fabulous narrator and bought the characters to life. Twist and turns provided a story line that could not be guessed. I personally preferred this book to the first.

An excellent sequel!

As soon as I saw this book, I knew I had to read it. I loved The Dressmaker so much when I read it. But obviously that meant I was worried I'd be disappointed. Alas, there was no need to worry! A wonderful sequel to one of my favourite books.

Spoilers ahead:

Surely there was a better way to end this story...

I loved the first book, but this one feels too forced.

Follow on book to The Dressmaker

Funny and clever but a bit too long so that it became annoying sometimes.

The Dressmaker's Secret

I loved The Dressmaker's Secret! I saw the movie and enjoyed this sequel. The attention to detail with regard to the dresses and costumes painted a vivid picture. I loved the very Australian accents too and as I grew up in the 50's this evoked memorable moments of my mother's and auntie's dressing styles. Bernice Vergou

Fell flat as a pancake

I so enjoyed the first book, but this became ridiculous and boring. Why would you place your child in an institution you’d hated as a child? Why put up with working for fools with no talent? The welfare officer is the most dedicated one in Australian history- get that boy or bust! The characters were only ever caricatures, especially the cross dressers and their club. Surely the judge could have snuffled out any problems instantly. Why dredge up the people of Dungatar again? Just so May could get some revenge too? What does William like about his horrid wife? As for all the references to cut, style, material, drapery, size, stitches etc, I really couldn’t care! It has become a book about dressmaking and should have a suitable warning on the cover. Very disappointing.
