Publisher's summary

In response to a report about souls being stolen, a little girl must find out who the soul stealer is before the missing souls leave their owners to die.

Eleven-year-old Pingzi Po loves her freedom as a demon queller. In a few years, she could end up in an arranged marriage. But as long as she succeeds as a demon queller, Pingzi believes she can keep her freedom.

When the emperor of the medieval Far East receives a report about soul stealing in a distant province, he sends Pingzi to that province to find the soul stealer. Thrilled at any opportunity for adventure, she departs at once with her guardian and companion, Benzel of the Wolf, a dragonslayer from the Northlands.

But when Pingzi confronts the man who sent the report, he claims to know nothing about it. It’s true that souls are being stolen from the most promising young men in the province. If their souls don’t return soon, they’ll die. Confounded, Pingzi must figure out how to investigate such a puzzling case.

While in search of a sorcerer, Pingzi meets a dragon keeper and a dragon oracle, a dragon with the power to predict omens about the future. As truths collide, Pingzi struggles to find a way to quell demons, save lives, and tell a very delicate truth to the emperor. A truth that could result in the deaths of the very people she’s trying to save.

The latest awesome Pingzi Po story!

I read and reviewed The Dragon’s Omen in October of 2021, today I listened to the audiobook narrated by Resa Nelson. Having recently finished listening to the Dragon’s Gods series, I found listening to The Dragon’s Omen different than when I originally read the book. Having the context of the other series made Pengzi’s portent and the Dragon’s omen provided to Pengzi more poignant. I’ve included my origan review below with a minor update.

Resa Nelson’s Demon Queller stories are some of the best fantasy stories I’ve read, along with excellent storylines they all contain a rich cultural element of ancient China. The Dragon’s Omen is no different this time the reader is introduced to the concept of soul stealing. I had no idea there was such a thing and to find out it is something steeped in history I was amazed – not to mention enlightened. This story of young Pingzi Po and her travels to new parts of China in search of demons to quell, or truths to unearth was one of the best Pingzi Po stores I’ve read. This would be a great introduction to Resa’s writing and the Demon Queller stories. -update- I would suggest reading the Dragon God’s series prior to reading or listening to this book. I received an Advance Reader Copy of the eBook and chose to provide my review.

Listening to Resa narrate her own books has been an awesome experience, she is able to give voice to each character and provide life to the stories.

An original fantasy - by Shana W

I found the narration by the author a little too measured and over enunciated, but I enjoyed the story very much and that kept me listening. Pingzi Po is an 11-year-old Demon Queller in the Far East. A report claims that young men's souls have been stolen, and Pingzi is sent to investigate with her dragon slayer companion, Benzel. The plot was very unpredictable and entertaining, and I was intrigued to see how it would be resolved.
I received an audiobook copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Another great addition to the Demon Queller series

Resa Nelson continues the Demon Queller novels with The Dragon's Omen. This is another great addition to the series. Great characters, settings, and plot move the story forward at a good pace for my tastes. Audio Version: Resa Nelson continues to impress me with her narration. As I always say, typically those that narrate their own works fail miserably, but Resa does a great job and continues to get better with each novel she narrates.

Recommend

This is part of a series which is really good. Goes more into detail from the first book. Moves the characters to new locations for the House of Poe. Very outspoken women, protective men, and traveling everywhere. I would recommend this book.

Received ARC for exchange for honest review.
